Gillespie's Attorney has problem with UK contract.

Featured Replies

According to the Lexington Herald a termination clause has Gillespie's attorney a little upset.

Campbell, 47, identified the terms allowing UK to fire Gillispie without having to pay him compensation as a "major" roadblock. The Memorandum of Understanding Offer requires UK to pay Gillispie $1.5 million per year for each year remaining on the deal (up to four years) if he is fired without cause.

But a firing for justifiable reasons, or "for cause," would free UK of any financial obligation. The two sides could not agree on how to define "for cause." This led Kentucky to decide to let the Memorandum of Understanding Offer serve as the contract.

"I don't know the particulars of Tubby, but maybe I'm just trying to avoid that same scenario," Campbell said.

When asked how Gillispie was reacting to the impasse, Campbell said, "It's unfortunate we are where we are. But Billy's going to coach basketball and win games, hopefully."

This one's been boiling up for a while now. Part of the problem is that UK isn't holding out for the right to fire for just cause solely over wins and loses as Billy Clyde's lawyer attempts to intimate, and I don't see them giving it up.

Whats that, finding a new job and leaving?

Certainly no school is going to put in a contract you must win a certain amount of games. That wasn't in Tubbys contract and he left, was not fired. I wonder if it has to do more with Billy off the court.

Sounds like Attorney Campbell, wants a better definition of "cause" and UK, wants the term to remain vague.

I do believe the comment, regarding President and A.D. may not be in place, which would then be interruptive by anyone assuming those roles, are reasonable from Gillispie's camp.

Get it done, focus on the season and don't let this continue....both sides.

Gillespie is stupid for having stepped foot in a UK facility without having signed a contract, IMO.

Why, might I ask?

Would you take a job, leave another one, move and work for 6 months without an agreement in hand?

Maybe someone with more knowledge here can chime in, but its my understanding that these contracts often take a while to be finalized.

Granted, this is getting excessive, but my impression is that not many coaches have a signed contract before they start coaching.

Nick Saban took 6 months to ink his contract with Alabama I think.

In this profession, I wouldn't think anything of it.

I'd bet the off court stuff is what they aren't agreeing on. Rumor has Billy G living it up big time these days...

The issue arises because "cause" has reared its ugly head in this case. The actual contract is unusual.
