Very true nees. There were many times that last year's Holmes team would have completely lost it or at the very least showed poor sportsmanship. A couple plays come to mind...

 

--Palmer's sick 50 yard catch and run.....no ocho cinco type celebration or even a word to a Dixie defender.....just handed the ball to the ref like he'd been there before (which he has many times ;-)

 

--Molony's TD in the 4th on 4th and goal....A couple Holmes defensive linemen thought they had held, but they did not jump on the ref's at all. They showed composure even with what could have been a controversial call.

 

These Bulldogs seem to be very respectful young men. Which again, points to discipline.

I have to agree. Had dixie continued running the ball they would have controlled the clock, keeping the Bulldog offense off the field. I give credit to the athleticsm of the Bulldogs and the questionable strategy on Dixie's part. I see a lot of Ft. Thomas people on here singing the praises of one coach and not necessarily the young men that were on the field. I find it odd that the Bulldog contingent isn't on here praising a coach. Makes me wonder??? I am not sold on Coach Lickert yet. 2 wins doesn't merit a MEDAL of HONOR.

 

You are unbelievable. Most 'Ft. Thomas people' have only seen one game. They rely on the rest of us that have seen other games for info. When a team pulls an upset, they obviously were prepared and put in the right position to make plays and they obviously made those plays. When you see the pattern over the last four years that Lickert has of putting his kids in the right position, we can come to the conclusion that if the kids make plays, they can compete with anyone.

 

Your skepticism of Lickert is nothing short of a scapegoat for the kids. Bottom line, he'll have higher expectations for those kids than you could fathom and they WILL reach them. That is, if people don't continue to make excuses for them and hold them accountable.

 

As for no "Bulldog supporters" posting on his behalf. If they were 6-0, the only posters we'd have is you, HHSDad and Bulldog77. Hell, no one was complaining about being an 'also-ran' the last 5 years.

Also, if you re-read the thread, there are a lot of people calling Miller and co. STUDS!!! Thinking a coach can win a game if the kids don't produce is naive and you're better than that...

Well, you should be.

 

Lickert won me over early... I covered the Holmes-HC game two years straight now and I can tell you that the Holmes sideline from one year to the next is night and day. Last year players had their helmets off, jerseys untucked, sitting on the bench, yelling at each other, yelling at the refs... Basically no discipline was in place. Then I cover the game this year and I see a bunch of young men standing up, helmets on, being positive, picking each other up, etc... Discipline is a key ingredient of good coaching and you could tell Lickert had full control of his team. You have to start somewhere and discipline is as good of a place as any.

 

Not only will Lickert's young men be better football players with his teaching, they will be better people as well. Isn't that what its all about anyway?!?!

 

Sit back and enjoy the ride because Holmes is very lucky to have Coach Lickert on campus.

 

Exactly!!! He's instilling discipline and everyone, besides some unrealistic parents, are loving him for it. Teachers love him because the kids are acting better in class. I was standing there when officials told him that this was the most disciplined Holmes team they ever officiated. Some say he doesn't have their respect, I say they have no clue.

Let's face it. Many high school football players will not have the opportunity to play at the next level. So the life lessons that Coach Lickert and staff are teaching these young men are invaluable. Winning is important, and anyone who knows Coach Lickert can vouch for the fact that it is extremely important to him. But in order to win, the little things must be in place. Coach Lickert has very high expectations for his players both off and on the field. I hear many people are pleasantly surprised with the new attitudes and sportsmanship of his players. With a great deal of hard work on the part of his players and coaches, the Holmes Football players will not only be better athletes but also better people. Whereas Coach Lickert may not "merit a medal of honor" with only two wins, possibly the work he and his coaches are doing to help develop these young men as responsible community members does.

Congrats to Coach Lickert and his staff.

The Dogs won the game, some on here mentioned that they were handed the situation, I think they were ready to play and made the plays they needed to make on both sides of the ball.

Holmes has gotten an excellent coach in Lickert...and I liked Dave Trosper as well.

It will be neat to watch these Dogs grow and finish the season.

I think the future is very bright, especially when Coach Lickert and staff can get the whole off-season weight program in...

Congratulation's to the Bulldog's for your win last night against Dixie. I am an alumni of Holmes and so is my spouse (76-77). I'm very happy to hear that the team is holding back from arguing with the ref's and the opposing team (we have seen this many time's when our son played for Dixie). We were not able to attend the game. It sound's like you have a great coach. Please believe anything is possible! Good luck the rest of the season and keep up the great teamwork.

1. No I praised the kids. I am not complaining about being an also ran. I HAVE BEEN THERE with these same kids. I know a coach cannot win if the kids don't produce. When I was there I preached to the kids I had to be better students and citizens, because most of them will not have football after high school. That being a BETTER man was more important than being a good football player. Also if I had a kid that was taking cheap shots or mouthing I sat them. What other coaches allowed and did was out of my control.

Look at the seniors that were there last year. I knew before this year ever started that these kids would be better behaved. No disrespect intended. The kids that are seniors now were a joy to coach as 8th graders and freshman. You take a look back a year, see who was there and one player in particular. Where is he now?

 

Now, let's remember. I am afforded an opinion. As far as buying in, Maybe not just yet. But I will have you know that one of the seniors called me last Saturday. I had a long talk with him. I would like to think that I am a big reason he was playing last night. So if you don't think I support the DAWGS you are wrong. Dead wrong. I do not trash talk Lickert to the kids. I listen to them. I urge them to keep playing. Just because I say I am not sold on him yet, doesn't mean I don't respect him. I just KNOW that those kids deserved to have the dancing balloons. Win, Lose or Draw.

It sounds like you're not-so-subtly suggesting that you had to save Coach Lickert from losing a player. I'm not close to the situation; but from everything I've heard, and what I know about Coach Lickert, I have a hard time believing that he needs anyone to help him keep the kids on the team.

NO. All I said was this kid was having some issues. I listened to him. I told him he had to make his own decision about HIS future. He is a good kid, who has had some personal problems he had been dealing with, and needed someone to talk to outside of his family and the coaching staff. Not saying I saved anything. All I said was that if someone doesn't believe I support the DAWGS they are wrong. Dead Wrong. So in a sense, I am supporting Lickert.
