This was a really tough one for me. Holmes Grad, Homecoming, heck, it was even my class's 30th . . .ummmmm 10th reunion. On the other hand my one and only nephew plays for the Red Colonels.

 

On the Holmes Coaching situation I'll say this . . .If Steve Lickert raises the bar in every way possible, then he is precisely the right guy for the job. With all due respect to previous coaching staffs, I've seen more positive things surrounding the Bulldogs in the two games I've gotten to see than in the past 10 or so years combined. I'm not questioning anyone's effort here because I know how hard the coaches worked at Holmes in the past. However, chemistry is a funny thing, and when it's there, it just feels and looks right. At this time, the chemistry looks and feels right. It felt really good to walk out of a Holmes game and feel proud of the young men wearing the Crimson and white.

On the Dixie situation . . . Coaches need to lead by example. Sideline "discussions" like some of what I witnessed don't lend themselves to instilling confidence in your young proteges. Play calling aside, get to a base offense and stick with it will you please? I know how disappointed some of the players are, they haven't lost confidence, but they're on the edge. Time for somebody to step up.

As to the bolded part, I hope every Holmes player reads it and feels good about himself and makes up his mind to work even harder to make the alumni and themselves even prouder. Good job young men. As I posted after the Highlands Holmes game, whether its due to Steve and his assistants or whether its due to last year's seniors graduating, the kids on this year's football team are very polite and play hard, clean football.

 

As to the coaching "debate", I'll stay out of it other than to say I like both Tom and Steve. Steve's on his honeymoon and with wins like last Friday's, it could be an extended one. Tom on the other hand has returned Dixie to more than just respectability. Unfortunately that was several years ago and because the team has not been able to make the additional leap to being an elite team, some of the followers are getting restless, which is only "normal". Again, both Steve and Tom are good people and good coaches.

I didn't even notice the coaches arguing. I was too confused and stunned with what was occurring on the field.

Once again, I wasn't there but if the arguing was between Coach Sorrel (Defensive Coordinator) and Head Coach (Tom Spritzky) that hardly qualifies as headline news. I think it may be a case of fans being close enough for a change to hear the banter more than anything else. These two argue back and forth in the heat of battle all the time. Why? I have no clue, but it is hardly indicative of trouble in paradise. I would be more concerned with the kids melting down myself. Too many individuals from what I am hearing.

 

Marty and Daniel, you are the leaders of this team. I suggest you rally the troops in a positive way and weed out the bad ones. We have far too many good team players surrounding you to suffer from any primadonna's who want to be individuals. This is your last year fella's, how do want to be remembered? As underachievers or state champions? Because when the last whistle blows you will only have to answer to yourselves. Did I do all that I could or is there something left in the tank?

... I had a coach say that his team did not get *better* during its bye week. Holmes coach Stephen Lickert, thank you for your honesty. In fact, Lickert said yesterday that his team actually got worse during its time off.

 

"We did; we got worse," Lickert said. "We didn't have the intensity and the focus we needed. We didn't get better during the bye week and it really ended up hurting us."

 

Holmes came out of the bye week and lost 14-0 to Scott. Since then, the Bulldogs have upset Dixie Heights and are still alive for a playoff spot.

 

Now, if we can just get a coach to tell us that his team's bye week didn't come at a very good time.

Actually there are four captains on the Dixie team, Marty, Daniel, Stephen and Joey. And I think that all four of the boys do a fine job of leading but it is up to the team to follow. I also know that they are more than aware that this is their last year and are doing everything in "their power" to build team. Sometimes it is very easy for fans to sit in the stands and "know" what the team is feeling but if you are really around the boys, you do know. One loss does not end a season, it's what they do with the loss that will make the difference. I'm still with you boys, GO DIXIE!

If the run is working why stop it???? And if someone has a petition to sign to make some "changes" at Dixie I thnik there wouldn't have been enough paper at that game for everyones signatures! And what's with the in-fighting among coaches???? Is this part of the problem..... :confused:

 

Sounds like you are behind the Colonels in this post. I did not see any arguing with the coaches. I believe you are with the colonels and when they loose it is someone elses fault they lost.

 

I am not letting the coach off the hook but execution is key. A coach can call any play and if it is executed like it is suppose to be it will be successful.

The reason people are questioning the passing with 5 mins. left (Me included) is because the pass was dropped. (by a player not a coach) My point is there was plenty of blame to go around on Friday, and if you are truly with the colonels you should support the coaches, because when little johnny hears you questioning the coaches, that can spread doubt into Johnny's head about this team. You can either kick the Colonels while they are down or pick them up and encourage them to go get the Rebels this week. This includes the Players, and Coaches.

Just seemed to me and a number of other fans that if the run was working as Marty proved why would we pass when that was obviously our weak spot that night? They could have ground out the yardage, controlled the clock and than done a short little pass into the end zone for the score or let the run carry it in. And as for Little Johnny, I don't think the boys care what we on Bluegrass say or what fans at the game say because they have enough to do and take care on the field.

That game is over. Now we wait and see what the team can do about it. I hope it lights a fire under them and they start kicking!!!! Thanks Fisky52 for mentioning the other captains. I know it may not mean much to some people but it does to the other captains. All of them are working hard to help the other players. Maybe they need to stress, if you don't care to do your job, then move out for someone else.

 

I also agree that our sideline doesn't do much of anything. They need to rally around the boy's on the field. It's their team let them hear you. The parents could do a little more cheering as well. I'm not sure the kids hear you but if they do it's got to be a huge boost to do the job.
