On the subject of the game, Holmes played well

Not saying he does not deserve credit, but there have been more than a few Highlands faithful that have taken shots at Tom on this website this year and in the past. Hopefully he will get Dixie straightened out and they will make it to Birdland in the second round of the playoffs.

This was a really tough one for me. Holmes Grad, Homecoming, heck, it was even my class's 30th . . .ummmmm 10th reunion. On the other hand my one and only nephew plays for the Red Colonels.

 

On the Holmes Coaching situation I'll say this . . .If Steve Lickert raises the bar in every way possible, then he is precisely the right guy for the job. With all due respect to previous coaching staffs, I've seen more positive things surrounding the Bulldogs in the two games I've gotten to see than in the past 10 or so years combined. I'm not questioning anyone's effort here because I know how hard the coaches worked at Holmes in the past. However, chemistry is a funny thing, and when it's there, it just feels and looks right. At this time, the chemistry looks and feels right. It felt really good to walk out of a Holmes game and feel proud of the young men wearing the Crimson and white.

 

On the Dixie situation . . . Coaches need to lead by example. Sideline "discussions" like some of what I witnessed don't lend themselves to instilling confidence in your young proteges. Play calling aside, get to a base offense and stick with it will you please? I know how disappointed some of the players are, they haven't lost confidence, but they're on the edge. Time for somebody to step up.

I agree with you after this weekend I think he and Pete Carroll can't coach and should be fired both of their teams laid eggs. So point all blame to the coaches. Don't give the other team any credit at all.

 

This is a great win for Holmes they played a great footbal game. They forced turnovers and I am not sure if they had any, they made big plays on offense when they needed. These are all the things you need for an upset.

 

Congrats Holmes go beat CCH and set up a rematch.

I love how all of the Highlands faithful get on here and sing the praises of alum Steve Lickert and in the next breath take a shot at another alum Tom Spritzky. Oh how we forget where the Dixie program was before Tom got there and Steve appears to have the Holmes program headed in the right direction. I do not believe that praise would have been heaped upon Tom had Dixie won the game, but since Holmes won we will put Steve Lickert right up there behind Dale and Vince Lombardi. Lets treat both of these guys with the respect they deserve.

Dixie's team is fine but at a loss to explain coaching calls and unable to over-ride caoching calls that make no sense. The team can see what needs to be done but again, when on the field you have to follow the call as it is given to you.

On the flip side, the coaches aren't throwing interceptions, fumbling the ball, missing tackles, missing blocks...etc. I think some of us, myself included (sometimes), put too much on the coach whether it's good or bad. We also don't make the players as accountable as maybe they should be. From high school to the pros...JMO

 

I've heard a few coaches say lately that it's up to the kids to make the plays, which is obviously correct. As long as they are putting them in a good position to make those plays.

Disagree, last week Dixie pounded the ball running down Conner's throat on the first drive. The next 4 to 5 drives Dixie continued to try and pass which resulted in 3 and outs. After halftime Dixie got back to running the ball which opened up the passing game.

 

As I stated earlier Dixie's passing attack seems to rely on the big play to much. They continue to force the ball to the outside of the field for 20+ yard completions. These are extremely high risk passes when balls are being over thrown and forced into coverage. If Dixie would work the whole field in there passing attack, and throw in some dink passes and work the middle with more high percentage passes it would open up those outside routes.

 

Right now the passing attack is a high risk adventure which isn't paying off and putting way to much pressure on thier "D" by constantly being put in short field situations and being on the field way to long. It seems that were either all pass, or all run, we haven't been able to mix the two halves successfully to compliment and keep the defense guessing.

My suggestion for Dixie, ride Molony until you can not no more. Week in and week out, he has been mr. consistency.

I'm just curious - why would anyone care how many one a day or two day workout's Dixie does over the summer? (except for those effected). Why such a big debate about the coach's at Dixie?

OK, here's my thoughts about the play calling in a nutshell. First of all I have watched and analyzed our offense for the past 10 years or so, so I think I have a pretty decent handle on it. First and foremost we are a spread offense passing team. Period.

 

Our coach, though he attended Highlands for a breif period of time, played four or five years at pass happy Hanover College. It is there where he learned his offensive strategy, and still to this day goes back from time to time for offensive coaches clinics. Passing the ball is what we do.

 

Running the ball is what we do so that we can pass the ball some more. We have a returning three year starting QB. Why would you not think that you could pass the ball? I realize the reality of the situation is that Bricking threw three int's and lost the game, but knowing that you will need a passing game in the playoffs, and knowing the explosiveness of our passing game and quick strike capabilities when it is on, why would you not believe in Joey's ability to get it done? So far he has thrown for 866 yards while we have rushed for 832. Coaches coach, but the kids play the game. I would find it hard not to believe in EJ, Joe, Brett, Ben, Conner, Marty, Freeman, Koski, Benson, and so on too. Not saying that your observations are not correct, but that I can see where he believed that Joey and company would snap out of it. Running the ball to win a game is not in Tom's nature, thought maybe it should be.

 

We red colonels have been spoiled with having a D1 QB at our helm the last ten years. Hopefully Tom will either fix it or adapt, but I think we all would agree that this years team is a little off in the air compared to it's pedecesors. Why I don't know cause Joe has the potential to be just as good as any of them in HS.

 

As to the point someone made about a "me" attitude I will only say this. Two years ago when these boys were sophmores it was that attituded that self destructed the team in the second round in a game they should have easily won IMO. Red Heat has been preaching the concepts of teamwork to these boys for the last couple years. To those of you Colonels who read this site I only have one thing to say to you.

I think that our team has some young players trying to step up but so far it is a struggle. As for Joe, passing is important but even more so is the ability of the receivers.... Again, if the call is to pass and Joe hits them in the numbers and the ball is dropped....who is at fault? the Coach? the QB? or the receiver?? Trust me when I say that the team is hungry and they have been working hard and we as supporters need to do just that. Does anyone believe that the Dixie team did not feel the loss on Friday? Speak with them if you have any doubts. Right now the team needs supporters that will encourage the boys to BELIEVE! On any given night at any given game things can go either way, it's what the team does the following week that really matters!
