KHSAA State Cross Country meet to be moved?

Featured Replies

I am hearing that the khsaa state cross country meet will not be at the horsepark campground this year. That it will be moved towards the back of the horse park where the vistors parking has been. I hope that this is not true.

I had seen that same thing about the state championship being moved away from the Horse Park but have since heard that they will keep it there and just change the location of the actual course. I think they said somewhere around the Polo course, close to where all of the vehicles have parked in the past meets.

Text of an email from Julian Tackett...looks like we're staying put in the campground for the next 3 years:

This is being sent to all KHSAA member schools that sponsor Cross Country through the Athletic Director, Principal and Cross Country Coach. It is requested that the Principal and/or Athletic Director please forward this information to the Cross Country coaches in case the email address on file with KHSAA is not correct.

After months of negations, discussions and meetings, we have been able to resolve the issue of the State Cross Country Meet. This was done in light of two surveys of competing schools, one in 2002 and one in 2006 which showed that 90% of our members desired for the meet to remain in Lexington and the vast majority of them wanting to remain in the Horse Park site.

The Kentucky Horse Park has been selected as the host of the 2010 World Equestrian Games. As such, the park will be undergoing major renovations. Much of that renovation will require relocation of the very animals that the park was originally built to showcase. Due to that uncertainty with regard to construction and relocation, the park was not able to commit to a long term specific new location for our meet.

However, we have reached agreement with the park to hold the 2007 through 2009 State Cross Country meets at the Kentucky Horse Park, back on the old Campground course where we have been for many years. We will be able to continue the same logistical layout as we have used in years past, with only some interruptions in vehicle entry adversely effecting future years. We will be working closely with the new staff at the campground to attempt to find a remedy to the lost revenue from those campers who circumvent admission by staying on Friday night, and will details out to all of the competing teams.

The office staff will begin immediately seeking 2010 site alternatives while keeping in mind those two surveys of our membership.

Again, the 2007 State meet (and unless something else occurs, the 2008 and 2009 meets) will be held at the campground of the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. This year's date is November 10. Thanks to our school administrators and coaches for their assistance throughout this process.

Glad that is cleared up.
