Highlands/Lou Male Scrimmage

Conners had a few sick runs running up the middle. I really thought the male db's were going to chase him down, but he seemed to pull away in the open field. I was much more impressed with him this week than the last against beechwood.

With the defense Male likes to run, once you get past 5-10 yards or so, in many cases you're gone.

How did the rest of the Birds look? Specifically did any players stand out who didnt last week? Lastly, did Hurtt play?

This score might lend itself to ask someone, how much did Beaumont really mean to Male the last few years? Is Beamont's middle name "Dynasty"?

Beaumont was a men among boys, to be sure, but Male lost a very good OL and quite a few other skill players (QB Gainey, WR Josh Williams). They have a lot of holes to fill this season.

You're right H. This team was definitely not the Male team of last year. Its very tough to replace players like Beaumont and Gainey. No standout running back for Male in this scrimmage. Heyman had a few runs up the middle for 4 or 5 yds each (although imo he's playing out of position: he should play either tight end or offensive tackle. As a running back, he's just another big kid that gets tackled by hitting him low). Their qb had a nice keeper for nice yardage. And they picked up decent yardage each time they ran the jet (ironically, we looked like we'd never seen the jet). Male's running game was just not consistent enough to be able to move the chains much. Male's passing game was off. When they had open receivers, the ball was often thrown behind the receiver. Male has a lot to work on if they want to be close to last year's team.

Birds O looked good in the first half. Guidugli threw some very nice passes, particularly the long one (Trey Jurgens had a couple of beautiful receptions) and Josh had some very nice runs for long tds right up the gut. As was pointed out earlier, because of Male's defense, if your rb gets a seam and has good speed, its off to the races. In the second half, Dale seemed to pull back the O and Male's D really played much better. What made our offensive production in the first half even more impressive was the absence of Cecil and Crawford (prior injuries).

Birds D was again very good. Not sure I'm yet going to say they are as good as the 04 defense, but they can't be far off. Played physical football and flew to the ball. When Male ran screens to try and take advantage of the Birds aggressiveness, we were able to quickly recover and stop the screen passes for little or no gain. I thought Stein in particular looked very quick for his size and covered a lot more ground at the lber position than he did last week. Michael Laber also looked very good at the defensive end spot, particularly considering he's only been playing the position for several weeks.

But we certainly have a lot to improve upon. Ryle is going to be a war. They'll be a lot of chest pumping and high emotions from the Raider players in Union next week and if the Birds walk around this week like world beaters, they'll get upset. I doubt Dale and the senior leaders will let that happen though. All in all, a nice game by the Birds. Good job young men and lets get even better this week in practice.

Highlands JV outscored Male's 21-0 (Will Bardo throws the deep pass as well if not better than any other Highlands qb. He could start this year for a lot of teams in Ky. If the kid stays patient, he'll end being a D-1 qb-so a close friend who knows the business told me and I think he's right.) and Highlands frosh outscored Male 7-0 (not sure if it is accurate, but I was told that Male didn't bring their frosh and we were actually playing against Male's second team JV team. If accurate, that says a lot for the way our frosh played).

Nice night for the Birds on all levels.

^ Nice summary, Leatherneck. I agree about Heyman playing RB. He's tall and probably a powerful runner, but Male needs players who are agile and lightning quick in the backfield. I would put him at TE or flanker. I think the key with Heyman will be trying to get him the ball beyond the LOS so he can use his power against cornerbacks.

Can anyone report on the freshman and JV scrimmage results?

Hurtt played linebacker. I thought the O line played very well. 63 (Dempsey) a Jr. has really stepped it up. Birds still have to shore up some loose ends on special teams.

As always, Male has the athletes to be a very good football team by the end of the season. Not saying they are definitely going to win 6A, but they best not be taken very lightly. Redmon has been doing this a while and knows how to coach up his kids.

How much will the O change when Cecil steps back in?

Wooohoooo!!! Go 'Birds! The last time HHS beat Male in a scrimmage, the 'Birds went on to win state! Let's hope the trend continues!

I watched #46 for Male alot last night and he didn't impress me one bit. The kid looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane.. I was told he was a pre-season all-american. I really find this hard to believe. You can just look at the kid and tell he has a ton of potential, but he didn't show it at all last night.........I was definately surprised at how much quicker HHS looked than Male. GO BIRDS!!!

What position is he being touted as All American. D-Line or RB?

If that guy is All American...then HHS has some ALL-WORLD players !! I'll vote him to the All AIRPORT team.

I'm not sure but which one the players was Dexter? was he #11 the boy that got injured on the kickoff? Man that was some hit for a preseason scrimmage. Maybe, they should eliminate the KO and KO return for these games.
