For example: I lived in this third-story downtown apartment where every morning at 8 they started jack-hammering up the streets beneath my window. I usually slept 'til 10:30 or so. 8. I nearly died when I was five; they even had me in the leukemia ward at the hospital.(Childrens' in Louisville? Or was it Jewish? I was five, after all.) While there, friends and family showered me with a mountain of toys and comic books, more than I knew what to do with. But I figured the other kids at the hospital needed them more than me, so I gave most of the stuff away to them when I got out. It saddens me to think that probably not a one of those kids are still alive.
