A Round of Pre-Season Observations For Kentucky Football

Featured Replies

It's time to get it on...

1. Andre Woodson has made the most improvement of any college quarterback from Freshman to Senior among all DI QB's in the last 10 years? Is that a fair assessment???

2. I'm real excited about the backfield. Rafael Little, Tony Dixon, and Alphonso Smith are enough depth to make defenses crazy. John Connor is a solid FB...I will miss Terrell Bankhead and his under-rated ability to block and rip off solid runs up the gut...I think John Connor can and will do the same?

3. Nearly forgot....Maurice Grinter?

4. Wide receivers....what will defenses do to contain...Keenan Burton, Dickie Lyons Jr., Jacob Tamme, and Steve Johnson...add Domoreo Ford and some solid newcomers...the Cats will have weapons all over the place...

5. Offensive line will need Garry Williams to be eligible and ready. Christian Johnson good to go???

6. Linebackers....one of my pet peeves over the last few years...Woodyard hurt people in the last couple of weeks of the season...a more physical group who can stop the run and contain people in the flats are vital to defensive success.

7. Is that Prayig Mantis (spelling?)_ Jamil Paris back?

8. Lones Sieber was hyped. It's time he starts connecting on a regular basis or this once solid part of UK's game will cost them close games....Can Ryan Tydlacka beat him out?

9. Hope Tim Masthay either A) Gets punts off quicker this season or B) Works on throwing the football more often...:D

10. Will UK's defensive schemes change under Coach Brown?

11. Is Kentucky underrated by magazines and the media? Personally, yes...most people are basing on the poor defense...even I, blasted on a weekly occasion about the defense, however, the last 2 games vs. Tennessee and Clemson was a totally different defensive football team than the previous 11 games. And it was a good thing...

12. Will UK students get more excited for UK football?

13. 8 home games. Would like to buy new goalposts for a selected game in October.

14. What reasons give people the idea that Louisville will beat Kentucky this year?

15. Last but not least.....you know the drill....will the UK band stink as bad this season as the previous 10?????? Absolutely horrrrrid...will they still need a microphone to play Mary Had a Little Lamb??? The band and band director are a FRAUD.

#14......Because UofL is better. Although I do think it's going to be much closer than most expect.

I agree it should be much closer. I wouldn't be surprised or shocked if Kentucky beat Louisville this season. It will come down to who can stop who.

Imo is that U.K. could and probably will be better in 07 than 06 yet not have a better record. Last season, outside of L'Ville the OOC schedule was weak to say the least. This season' ooc is much tougher imo. U.K. still plays in the SEC :scared: , not many wins in conference (if any), I do look for one , maybe two. The defense did look like a different unit the last two games ut they have to show up EVERY week. For the majority of the season they played the "matador" defense..............wave at em' as they run by and try and not get in their way :D . The "O" should be very good, I do worry about the line though. On "D" Woodyard was an absolute force, U.K. will need more an one player on "D" this season. Imo special teams will need to improve as well. Special teams are a very important part of a teams sucsess and probably the most overlooked part of the game by most.

I am predicting 6 wins at the most and hope that I am wrong and there are a few more wins on there.

UK will have to score 35+ to beat UofL IMO. Im not saying they won't, I just think they'll need that many (at least) to win.

Paris is back...as is Christian Johnson.

They got another kid to return at WR...Strickland, I believe, and there is some scuttlebutt that LaMarkus Boswell could be in camp. Highly thought of athlete that was going to try basketball.

It will be interesting to see how the O-Line shapes up.

Obviously, the defense will be a concern until they prove they can stop people.

The fun has begun...

1. UK did positive things last season. Beating Georgia and Clemson showed that Grandpa Brooks isn't completely worthless.

2. UK has stars on the offensive side of the ball. Woodson can sling it and Burton can make plays.

3. Last season wasn't as golden as UK fans are bringing themselves to believe. The defense was horrid. The team still suffered sever beatings at the hands of Louisville and LSU. A couple of the "pay to play at home" teams gave you everything you wanted and then some.

4. The schedule fills out horribly for the Cats this season.

EKU-Gimme 1-0

Kent St- Should be a gimme, however we all know how Grandpa Brooks lets his teams "play down" to the MAC teams 2-0

Louisville- Unless the Cats can score 50 or pull down 4+ turnovers, they can't win this game, I expect a blowout with Louisville's defense earning respect they are often denied 2-1

@Arkansas- At home you might have a shot, on the road I don't see it 2-2

Florida Atlantic- Who thinks of Owl's when they think of Florida? I mean seriously, why an owl? 3-2 (Sidebar- Schnellenberger has a lot of returning starters on this team, Beware the Pipe!)

@South Carolina- Spurrier will pounce on you, kill you, and then play with you dead carcass just to amuse his national audience. 3-3

LSU- BEAT DOWN 3-4

Florida- I'd say you have a pretty decent shot considering the numbers that Florida has to replace, but then I remember that UK's only good for moral victories against UF. 3-5

Miss St- You'd better win this one. 4-5

@Vandy- To many seniors on Vandy to let you leave Nashville winners 4-6

@Georgia- Payback, with a vengence 4-7

Tennessee- Guess who has the 2nd longest losing streak in a series the nation. 4-8

5. "You can't argue with the results we have had", This type of arrogance for a coach who is 17-30 says so much.

Tennessee- Guess who has the 2nd longest losing streak in a series the nation. 4-8

Is that true? UK really has the second longest losing streak in a series? Notre Dame/Navy would be the longest, but I had no idea that UT/UK was second. I'm guessing UK/UF can't be far behind.

I saw Micah Johnson at the KY/TN All-Star game and he looks to have shed at least 20 lbs IMO....

Yes it is. Tennessee has won 22 straight meetings verses Kentucky. The all time record for the series is 70-23-9. The series has run from 1893-present, in that time frame UK was was also known as Kentucky A&M, and Kentucky State.

You can list as many points as you can think of. It still comes down to one thing: defense.

I think that UK will beat either UF or UT this year. Yes it's said every year but UK should have beat UT last year. It's at home and it should be a good game.

As for the support of the students, I fully expect there to be a lot more this year. This is based on several things, mostly the unbelievable support we (the students) gave when buying tickets at for the bowl game, but also because of the increase of numbers of student season tickets already sold. Plus with so many high quality teams coming to Commonwealth, it should be a great season in the student section.

:thumb: :thumb: Defense is what will tell the tale of this U.K., U.L. or any team for that matter. " If we score, we may win..............If they NEVER score, we will never lose"........."Defense wins championships" ;)

I have no idea who said it first but a former coach at my h.s. alma mater used to say it all the time and had it posted on a sign above the locker room door.
