Congrats to the Bulldgos its time for me to eat crow, congrats to you all for proving all the doubters wrong(myself included) for getting the job done and believing in yourselves even when a lot of ppl (again myself inclueded) Did not think you guys had what it takes as a TEAM to get it together and make it to rupp. On a side note Maile is and absolute stud, he was the only reason CC was in the game at half, I did not watch the second half so i can't comment on that, but with out Maile this game is over at half time.

Cov Cath's wheels fell off when Jacobs fouled out.

They had no rythum offensively and took some highly questionable shots with the game still within reach.

You can probably say that they had little offensive rythym even with Jacobs in last night. Defense kept them in the game, and the inability to get a stop in OT is what lost it.

 

I was surprised to see CovCath not play zone. Holmes was consistently getting close in shots but just missing them. Other than Henderson, no one else was close to making a perimeter shot.

The Covington Catholic Coaching Staff hates zone, just like at Rupp last year when no one person could stop Apollo's Tyler Brown, but the Colonels didn't switch to their effective 3-2 zone (which had dominated Holmes previously that year). Can't say that I agree with it.

 

 

Otherwise, Holmes won the game for the same reason of each of their wins against CovCath the past few years: offensive rebounding. Easy putbacks and multiple shot oppurtunities wore the Colonels down and energized Holmes. It also gave CovCath little chance to run a transition offense.

Henderson is the most improved player in the region. He was an athlete with phenomenal hops last year. This year he is a basketball stud. His shot has developed, defensively he's possible one of the best in the region and we all know what he can do around the basket. He seems to be maturing unlike someone else on the team.

 

If he plays the Sweet 16 like he did in the regionals he will be a large D-1 recruite by the end of next week, if he isn't already.

Why in the world did Coach Listerman has Todd in the game with four fouls? He had been substituting offense for defense for the 2minutes before that. Right before TJ picked up his 5th, Listerman had taken out Bovard for Brown. Why not take out Jacobs? They was that game was going he could have put him right back in on offense.......................it was dumb foul though.

Remember the end of another era happened last night also, and that is Holmes hosting the Ninth Region. Starting in 09 there will be no more home court advantage in the Ninth and really that is the way it should be. No more parking worries, no more over heated gyms to sit in, no more having to arrive three/four hours prior to the start of the game to get a ticket. No more double sessions, and no more starting times of 5:30pm.

 

Having the Ninth play at The Bank of Kentucky Arena @ NKU is a dream come true, except maybe, for the hosting schools....

1. One of the best H.S. games I've ever attended. You felt like, at 39-27, that it was about to be over...and then...as LABS and cshs81 chronicled...it turned.

 

2. I was sitting on the Holmes side, and their cheers were all positive and pro-Holmes. They were fun, enjoying themselves, and really thrilled to be in the moment. If a couple of them acted foolishly after the game, forgive them. Every school has its people who do dumb things when the emotion runs high. As cshs said, CCH wasn't without a rude cheer of their own.

 

3. Rice and Henderson were just too much for CCH. Athletically, vertically, from a quickness standpoint...just too much. Arrez' defense on TJ was huge.

 

4. Redundancy alert: the Luke Maile-era has arrived. Physically strong. Intense. Tough-minded. If he improves his perimeter game a little, which I'm sure he will, he will be a monster match-up for the next two years. As for now, he'll be busy being one of the best 5 or 10 catchers in America in his class.

 

5. Watching the development and maturation of Duran over the last 4 years has been fun -- I'll miss that. He evolved from a kid that protested every call to a young man that figured out there are better ways to "work the refs," be nice to them. I've really enjoyed the Duran era at Holmes...both the good times and the bad.

 

6. Austin Hill and Brandon Brown are two young men that I find it impossible not to like and root for.

He has a tough job ahead of him, but you have to love seeing someone that happy about being given the chance to do something special. Red looks good on you Steve.

One of the best posts I've ever seen on here H.S., you summed up the night, the event, both schools, and their players perfectly.

 

As a parent of one of the CCH guys I'll miss watching them play, whether it was football or basketball it's been allot of fun for the last 4 years and it's very sad to see it end. I asked my step son last night if it had set in that since he was 5 he played football, basketball, baseball or soccer and that it might now be over forever. That sports fair or not were how allot of people see him and were such an important part of his life almost daily. All he could say was that it was "weird" or seemed strange that he would'nt be going to practice tomorrow. I'm sure that it will hit him after a few weeks that 12 years of something that was so big in his life may now be done.

This might be one of the classiest, most well thought-out and interesting posts I've ever read on this board in my several years here. I appreciate your upbeat and positive comments and I applaud them. Some of the Holmes kids face issues that 95% of us can't imagine and will NEVER be subjected to and are judged way, way too harshly at times. You truly are a FAN of high school sports and you just proved it to me.

 

Congrats to the Bulldogs. Take pride in your accomplishments, you beat two very talented and well-coached teams to get to the next step in your dreams. Play with poise and maturity and the big prize could be yours.

Arrez will get many major college looks on his NKY shining stars team over the aau season.

Congrats to the Bulldogs for finishing in the end. Free Throw shooting wins ballgames or atleast keeps you in ball games and that showed last night. Rice nailing those two in a hostile environment was huge. I hope they represent us well downstate.

 

CCH had a great year, TJ and Bovard had great careers and were excellent players who both could be playing together again next year at TM. I wish them the best and Brandon Brown the best up in the Ivy league. He is a pesky little bugger and a tough as nails kid. Schult got a tough break but had a nice career as well and he will rebound from the injury.

 

I like Holmes' chances downstate with their athletic ability. Good luck Dogs !
