Talent or coaching? Or both?

Featured Replies

With the Yeagle hiring, it makes me wonder.

Everyone is convinced already he will do at Lloyd, eventually, what he did at Beechwood.

Do you think there are equally talented kids in the Erlanger system as there were in the Beechwood system in the 90's?

Point being, is it possible to expect Yeagle to do what he did at Beechwood? Surely with this hire that is what is going to be expected by the Lloyd faithful.

Or was it just the perfect combination of a great coach and amazing athletes?

I think Yeagle is a great coach. He also had a talent pool 20 ft. deep! Just because he had GREAT success at Beechwood does not mean he will at Lloyd but......it does show that he knows how to get to that point.

If no talent currently exists....Coaching will prevail in time. If talent is in place, Coaching will only enhance and improve.

Talent makes average coaches good....good coaches great and great coaches, champions.

S3, as usual is right on the money. What Yeagle did at Beechwood was a nearly miraculous thing. Success like that doesn't come often. Mike will build a good solid program at Lloyd and will meet with success I feel. But to have expectations of repeating his enormous feats at Beechwood is unrealistic frankly. The time was right, the athletes were right, the copmpetition was right, the stars and the moons aligned etc.

Obviously it is a mixture of both, but I believe that good coaching will previal over good talent. Great coaches know who to use what talent they have a make the most out of it. You can have all the talent in the world but without direction and guidiance it is usually. Johnson Central is proof of this statement. School that was loaded with talent but always seemed to be mediocre at best. Bring in the right coach who can utilize this talent, and your on the fast track to winning.

When you win athletes will come to play. Lloyd has always lost kids from the lion peewee program, and alot of those kids was to Beechwood. Maybe now these kids stay and we might start picking up few extra.

No one may ever do what Beechwood/Yeagle did in the 90's. Mike will be the first to tell you that w/out the great athletes he coached at Beechwood it would have been hard to be so successful, along w/a great staff. However, it takes a great mind to know what to do w/all the talent that came thru Beechwood and obviously he knew what to do w/it. Plus, in the down yrs when you don't have those great athletes and still win a state championship, that is a great coach.

Lloyd may not make any noise this yr but in a yr, look out 2A. The existing players do have an idea what Coach Yeagle will be doing due to their former head coach did alot of what he will be doing. Remember Lil' Roy came from Beechwood under Mike. Lloyd runs the spread off and the 53 def, guess what Mike will run? Mike will build on what Roy has developed and will take them to the next level if the kids want it. One of Mike's best traits is his way of motivating young athletes and making the them believe they can win.

Build it and they will come!!

It will be interesting to see if Lloyd benefits from a sudden increase in transfers into their district with the hiring of Yeagle.

It was Bear Bryant that said. "It is not as much about the X's and O's as it is the Jimmies and Joes."

That being said it takes a good coach to find the Jimmies and Joes and provide them with the nurture they need to succeed.

In my opinion, it is a mix of both. Coaching and Talent play a key role in the success of a team. With out the proper dosage of both, your going to be a long shot.

Strike three is on the money. Great coaches will win many more games then average coaches, even if the great coach has less talent. And if the great coaches have a good talent pool, then watch out. And as someone else posted if a program is winning, talent will come.

There maybe soon, Will the Yeagle name bring the kids to Lloyd like it did Beechwood, as some of those great athletes that played for Beechwood were not always in the Beechwood system.

I thought all those guys went to Beechwood for the academics.

you have to have both to win it all- or at least avg coaching if you have superior athletes
