I think that when confronted with the "freedom of speech" mantra, people then try to qualify their outrage by claiming the "foreign soil" rhetoric. It's an easy way to sort of justify their outrage.

Why is it rhetoric. It's how people truly feel. That doesn't make it rhetoric.

 

Sure, some would be upset either way. But for some people, the additional element of the location of her remark is a contributing factor. I don't think anyone said it was the ONLY factor.

 

The fact that they are in a foreign country singing country music (a genre born in, and synonymous with the U.S.) makes them a symbol for America to those people. So, in a sense, they're suggesting that all of America is ashamed of their Constitutionally elected leader.

Do you think that because he's a country artist, that the world thinks that's how Americans think? If so, then I'm DARNED glad that the Chicks said what they did, so that the world will see that not all Americans agree with the President.

I think quite a few people are in category C: Those who supported the losing candidate, and only excuse her actions because they welcome any chance to put down this particular president.

The president speaking and some country singer speaking are totally apples and oranges! First of all the WMD thing doesn't enter into it. He believed there to be WMD based on what he was told. End of story on that.

 

But this has zero to do with the president. It's his job to make his views known. And yes, as the elected leader, he does in fact represent America's views, in a collective sense.

 

Toby Keith doesn't disparage the office of the presidency. No matter how many corresponding examples are brought up, it doesn't make what she did right. It was, quite simply, inapropriate.

For some reason they think the status of entertainer / actors gives them a right to think that everyone should agree with their views. I'll disagree slightly. I agree that the Grammy voters' opposition to the administration influenced their voting. However, the DC are very talented(outside of public speaking). Their talent earned them the right to be a top candidate for the prize. Their political views helped seal the deal.

Also, I don't care about what they said, it is nothing that hasn't been said before by Tim Robbins, Sean Penn, etc. and I still watch their films. What drives me over the edge is when everyone who was offended quit shelling out for their records and tickets and the Dixie Chicks acted like their First Amendment rights were being violated.
