If you make comments that offend the people buying your records and concert tickets, don't complain when they stop buying them. That's pretty much what they did, they lost some fans but gained many more. They understand completely that free speach comes at a price and it worked out pretty well for them. Five awards, WOW. Add John Mellencamp to the list of free speach lovers who, no doubt will lose some fans and opportunities. Although I don't necessarily agree with everything that John said in the Charlie Rose interview, I admire him for saying it. What is amazing to me is that those who have public platforms and slamb people everyday on our airwaves for their convictions that don't align with theirs are the first to condemn. What would they do it the Speach Police stopped them from airing their thoughts, flip burgers at Mickey D's ?

I think they do it in a Charlie Rose interview, the fallout to them and what will be to John Mellencamp is minimal. Personally, I have NO CLUE on any Charlie Rose interview. Not heard a thing about it. But the Dixie Chicks thing, where they did it, was all over the place. They do it in a Charlie Rose interview and I think they suffer minutely.

Does an American lose their right to freedom of speech if they travel abroad? Another question, many "regular" Americans criticize the President and his Administration, should they also expect to incur financial losses and blows to themselves personally...whether in the form of scathing contempt or impugned reputation? The thread was started to talk about the ignorant comment Natalie made when accepting the award which almost caused me to turn the channel. I thought it was disrespectful to the nominees that she was up against, and it just made her look stupid.

They never complained about the loss of fans, they complained about the orcrastrated decission of the Radio Stations to stop playing their music. As I said, they lost some fans, but gained many more by crossing over from country music. They never said everyone should agree with them either, they complained about the threats they got on their lives from the crazies on the right. Those folks that don't understand free speach. I don't agree with much that Hannity or Ingram or Limbaugh have to say, but I would not support a boycot because of something they said.
