I had heard that teacher openings, even coaching positions, get posted almost immediately when someone is nonrenewed or resigns. Also, that the said position has to be posted for 15/30 days before selection.

So the student becomes automatically eligible at their new school? I've been out of the business for a while but thought that if there is no change in residence that there were procedures involved that affected eligibility. This was always a sticking point going from public to private or vice versa. Sure glad we have someone to help all of us dinosaurs.

Now that it looks like the situation has reached its end result. It’s obviously unfortunate anytime someone loses a job. I know Coach Sullivan and have always liked Coach Sullivan, plus obviously he is one of the best basketball coaches in the state. I’m not sure exactly what all led to it coming to this point. However, Principal Wilson, and Coach Sullivan have been at Cooper since the beginning. So 16 years together, things for the majority of the time and the relationship had to be fine for most of the time to get to 16 years to last that long. Obviously much like a lot of marriages, something must have changed in the last few years to lead to this separation. We probably won’t ever know the full story from either side. Hopefully now both parties can move on. Cooper with finding a new coach, and Sullivan at what looks like to be St. Henry. 
 

I know I wish both parties nothing but the best. I hope Coach Sullivan does great at St. Henry, and that Cooper lands another top coach to continue being a top program too.

In the true meaning of it, you are correct.
The block or release is in how slow or fast the paperwork gets filled out & signed by the school one is leaving.

This is all very confusing to me even though I guess it shouldn't be but it seems there is a gray area. Can someone please explain how it works to become eligible or ineligible if not moving residences but switching schools after playing a varsity sport. I've seen multiple posts in multiple different threads over a stretched out period of time that pertains to this but they seem to contradict one another and every time I am left confused. People on here have even sent me the KHSAA by laws that I read and I was still left confused because it seems there is a gray area in there also.

It used to be if a coach goes somewhere else their kid is aloud to transfer to that school.

I'm not sure anyone can truly answer this.  They can give you what the by-laws read, but I'm not sure if those really mean anything.

In my memory the only for a better term "star player" that was made to sit was the Reed kid when he went from Mason County to Montgomery County this past year.  Someone may know of others.  But from all I've seen & know of, if you are good, you'll be eligible to play.  Outside of Reed, the only ones I've seen punished would be those considered role players.

Hmmmmm. You would think it would be the opposite that role players would slide through the cracks but the star players would have more of a harder time because the old school/district/KHSAA would be more against the star player having a bigger impact at the new school. But what does this paper work consist of that the old school needs to fill out?

Here is my understanding of how transfers work in Kentucky.  If you have played ANY amount of time on varsity and transfer you are automatically deemed ineligible.  You have to get with AD on the paperwork ASAP and get the information to the KHSAA.  Change of residence is usually a simple process with proving where you live.  Going from Private to public is a little more complicated because it's a matter of using the phrase, "financial hardship" as to why you are no longer staying at said private school.  Going to another public school without a change of address comes down to having some form of approval from an admin as to why you are now planning to attend said school.  Once any of these criterias are met the KHSAA will review the case and make a decison on your immediate eligibility.  A lot of the time comes down to things like how long did the student/parents take to enroll said child into the school.  How long till the new school got the kids transcripts from their old school to submit to the state.  There are a lot of factors that go into this which is why some siutations are different than others.  I've seen kids cleared in time for summer scrimmages and preseason workouts.  I've also seen cases where it took till the end of December to get a kid cleared to play.  Just know that not all cases are the same.

That pretty much sums up everything I have heard in the past as well. What is the paperwork that the AD at the former school has to handle?

From what I've heard the paperwork that the former AD is responsible for is what can hold up the process or speed the process up.

Again this is from my understanding.  The players former AD has to do some form of paperwork and also has to let the admins know they will need to release their transcripts.  What sometimes can hold that up is the AD/Coach.  Admins can use transcript hold ups for things like debt the player may have built up.  Example if a player hasn't turned in their uniform or still owes money for their travel suit.  Schools can hold up transcripts for transfers or even graduation until it s settled.  Sometimes this can be an easy and smooth process and sometimes it can get dirty.

Not sure on the accuracy but I heard it wasn't their decision to be in on the meeting, but I could be incorrect on that. Most of what I hear is third hand, fourth hand kind of information.

I believe the only exception to the "ANY amount of time on varsity" is if you play varsity but are not actually enrolled in the high school, I.e. a middle school student that has played varsity can transfer with no requirement to sit.
