These kids are all getting together and practicing at different places whether there's a coach involved or not. I've seen several times with the top QB's/WR/RB's/DB's in NKY and thrown, ran routes, and defended passes only to make each other better. Why wouldn't this be a good thing? NKY will continue to improve when top talent goes against top talent each day. can't fault kids for wanting to get work in against top talent. This isn't 1995 people....

Everyone program and every sport will have a couple kids that have one issue or another with a coach and there is typically an underlying reason as to why (playing time, recruitment, lack of recruitment, etc).

Had he been a Dixie coach, coaching same group of kids at Dixie’s field, I would have asked the same thing. 

And in my eyes, being paid vs non paid has nothing to do with it. If he is on Highlands (or insert any other school you’d like) staff, and have gone through KHSAA coaches training, rules clinics, etc. that is required each year, then I do not understand how he is able to communicate with and associate with kids outside of his team. 

Furthermore, am I to believe that these kids’ head coaches and coaching staffs are not permitted to communicate with their own players during KHSAA dead period, yet Matt is allowed to train with, communicate with, etc. during that time because he’s an unpaid coach and as long as he doesn’t coach a Highlands kid at Highlands, a Dixie kid at Dixie, and CovCath kid at CovCath at that time, then it’s permitted?

I agree with what the TheConch is trying to say here. I know I love the fact that kids from other schools are working out together and pushing each other. I also think it is great that schools allow trainers like Matt Shearer to be able to use their facilities to work with players. As Matt Shearer is one of the best QB's trainers in this area IMO.  I think the issue TheConch is pointing out is the fact that someone mentioned Shearer is now an assistant coach at Highlands too. If that wasn't the case then I don't think there would be any issue.  However, I do think if a trainer is going to make the jump to not only be a personal trainer but also be an assistant coach at a school, then there should be a rule or limitations in regards to working with other schools players then if they are going to coach somewhere. Not saying that is happening in this case, but there is definitely a conflict of issue there that teams can take advantage of if they want to in these scenarios. However, there is no rule against it currently, so there is nothing wrong with Highlands or any school doing this, but more so an issue on the state not having a rule for instances like this is the point TheConch is trying to make I believe.  

Well now that kids can transfer wherever they want does this stuff really matter?  The guy is not on their sidelines calling plays and I would almost guarantee that these high school head coaches are not giving QB play instruction.  Mountain meet molehill.

No different than Chad Lawrence training kids. He coaches for SK and has been working with kids for years. He used to train O'Hara a few years ago. Not a big deal really. Good for those guys helping the kids get better.

Which is great, and definitely a good thing when done right. Point is though like it or not, it can set up a conflict of interest. That teams definitely could work towards their interest if they wanted to, by having coaches on their staff training other schools players. Which doesn’t mean that is happening in these two cases, as I don’t think either of those guys would do that. However, it’s definitely a situation where schools could use this to help in other ways. Which is the point I think TheConch and I are saying. Which is why there probably should be a rule preventing or limiting how that is done. However, since there is no rule there is definitely nothing wrong with schools doing that right now, and it is smart.

Your first sentence is the possible conflict of interest that it can cause. Since it is so easy for players to transfer now. As I said doesn’t mean it is happening in this case, as I do believe he is doing it to truly help all these kids get better.  However, not hard to see how teams definitely could use this to their interest and take advantage of this being allowed currently. I think that is the whole point of possible trainers that work with multiple players joining a coaching staff, and then still working with other schools players after joining a staff. I don’t think it is happening in this case, but as I said you definitely can see how some school could use this to their advantage if they wanted too.

Thank you FC, glad someone can see the potential issue here, and doesn’t believe that just asking the questions results in me wanting kids to stop improving!

Oddly enough, the way I understand the DP, he could work with any player except those who go to the school he is coaching at during the DP.

And couldn’t coach a Dixie kid at Dixie, CovCath kid at CovCath, etc. as the facilities are closed to their own student athletes.

Most of those are not open to the public at any point, other than their own events.

Dead Period....? Is someone insinuating that Coaches are training Kids against a KHSAA rule?  It seems that topic needs it own place on BGP.
