Raceland just can't catch a break. They've been a loyal side-piece for years and the 'ship' finally broke off its long term thing with Pikeville.  But you know the type. Players gonna play.

  • This probably be the most painful Raceland finals loss. Raceland was in position to win this game today and just had the wrong decisions or wrong execution at the worst possible times. Huge

  • Trust me when I say I am on the struggle bus with everything going on.  And then the TD celebration and Da BGP Boyz came out to play.  LOL Congrats again to both teams, it was a great 1A game.

Raceland, a bridesmaid again.  Just can't seem to win the big one.

Trust me..... it's a lot harder than it seems.

Congrats to Sayre.  They built that program from scratch so that's an impressive achievement to have a state title now.

Congratulations to Sayre on winning your first state championship on the first attempt. Congratulations to Raceland on a really good season too. I know that no championship attempts have been won by Raceland but I believe that they will have one in the not so far future. The top two teams of 1A clearly played today in my opinion.

And the kind of offense they run, I doubt they ever will.

I absolutely agree. Raceland got better each game this season. Sayre has/was questioned on there soft schedule if they could beat a good team. They did such that, after running a Class 1A Gauntlet with Pikeville, Campbellsville, and now Raceland. All these teams were hyped to have a good shot at winning it.

Great win for Sayre!  You always remember the first championship!

Their RB/LB played a heck of a game and made a ton of tackles!

For Raceland, really feel for those guys.  Know they played their hearts out.

Keep grinding Rams!  Great season too!

Raceland not being able to win it this year they may never get one. I thought this was there year to bring a title back to the 16th or northeastern KY.

Here was the no call that gave Raceland a chance to win the game.

There is no way you put the ball in the air on 1st and 10 of your final drive after brutally running the ball all game and a stable full of horses that like! Sayre won and earned this game! I will say there were some very questionable calls down the stretch!

Congratulations to the Spartans Program! The gauntlet is complete and they just finished the mission like Thanos!

I totally agree and the time it took to get it is as, if not more impressive.

Congratulations to Sayre on a big win and to Raceland on another deep run. Two tough programs going at it! Being a Marshall graduate myself I am happy for Chad Pennington and I know he has a great bunch at Sayre that has worked hard for this moment. Raceland has done a tremendous job representing Eastern Kentucky over the years whether that's against a team higher in class, having a deep run in the state tournament, or playing an out of state opponent and I'm sure they will continue their attack at a state championship.

@Randy Parker Raceland has been four times but has never won. For many years they were stuck in a region having to deal with powers like Beechwood, Newport Central Catholic, or Bellevue but after their region realigned their first state semifinal run came in 2013 (although it still wasn't easy!) under then-coach T.J. Maynard and then in 2017 they reached the state finals for the first time under Mike Salmons, losing against Beechwood.

In the last eight seasons Raceland is 0-4 in the title game and they're actually not the only one that has happened to in a span of eight seasons. It reminds me of Boone County between 1987-1994 when they reached the state finals four times, losing in each. They had a couple of crushing losses in 1987 to Shelby County by a score of 17-14 and then again in 1992 when they lost 3-0 to St. Xavier.

This one came down to which team established their brand of football. Sayre did a great job doing that on the first drive and it just felt like they took advantage of a couple of mistakes Raceland made down the line. That being said, both school had fantastic seasons. Sayre coming through winning the title over a team that defeated them the prior season, and Raceland making it back to the state championship game despite several graduations from what many have called the most talented senior class to come through the school.

Sayre defense played well throughout playoffs.

Quick question here. Did that Sayre O-line give up a sack today?
