Plainly put, an overhaul is needed in my opinion. Have to figure out a way to include out of state opponents accurately. (Boyle’s victory over St Edwards, Trinity & ST X out of state wins).

Right now it’s all about scheduling to win games basically. Playing tough teams does not matter unless you win. 

Would also like to see RPI used for other sports like it is used for football. It’s basically meaningless outside of football which has never made much sense to me.

I totally understand how the mathematical tracking of multiple(7,10,15 or 49) states for OW and OOWP purposes seems overwhelming for my slide-rule…maybe need to upgrade to an abacus.  Playing out of state teams is optional and the benefits known and considered when scheduled.  However, required games is what needs tweaking.  I do think the disparity in District sizes should work hugely to the detriment in some instances.  Near and dear example…Beechwood is in the only 6 team 2A district and thus required to play 5 district games.  If they had not played Carroll Co. (1-9) and just played a 9 game season their RPI would be #2 and Mayfield would be traveling to Beechwood rather than visa-versa.  Playing Mayfield anywhere is a challenge.  Going to their home turf (despite how gracious they are as hosts) is a nightmare.  Hmmmm…. In what world should no game be worth more then winning a required game on a running clock shutout?

At this point I would be in favor of a committee deciding playoff pairings. I would think between KHSAA employees, a few former retired coaches, and even some school administrators you could figure this out. Make some big deal out of it if you want. Saturday after the season is selection Saturday. Teams learn their fate.

If we didn’t have a natural human bias I’d say you’d be onto something.

Think if they’re gonna use RPI, then RPI the entire playoffs for the class. Unfortunate travel for some but you can never make everyone happy. Account for out of wins better, not all out of state teams are equal.
 

Think the committee @Pi suggested is solid idea, assemble one that is comprised of various people. Long as it’s not going back through your district like we had a few years ago.

Then we would end up like the college football playoff.  Personalities and biases would factor into the equations and there would be hard feelings about seedlings who is in and who is out.  At least now the numbers dictate where teams, skewed or not.

I think a few tweaks could be made, but I don’t think an overhaul is needed. Do we forget how bad the “let’s just randomly choose which district gets to host”. At least with RPI, whether you like it or not, you know the formula and how it works. Then it’s up to you if you wanna take advantage of it, schedule hard regardless of numbers, or do some sort of combination of both.

Central routed CAL two weeks ago to win the district and is the consensus number one team in Class 3A, yet almost assuredly will have to play at CAL in the third round.

I’ve said over and over that I like the format the KHSAA uses for the playoffs, but the RPI is an absolutely atrocious metric.

RPI is good just needs to be tweaked some.  I like the RPI a ton better than the old way of if it was your regions turn to host or not.  I think you will be opening a can of worms with people and a committee deciding the parings.

I think we vastly overrate home field advantage in HS football. RPI in its current state is far from perfect, but let's not pretend that Central having to travel to CAL should have that much of an effect on the game.
