GBR Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Nothing like starting the season with a fierce rival, but that's what The Cardinals and Eagles do every season. Mayfield has a winning streak going against Graves that spans a decade and a half. Will this be the year that Graves snaps the losing streak? Let us hear your opinion. 2
gcbleedblue Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Finally! It’s football season. It’s been awfully quiet for this game this year. So many unknowns. Both teams have a new coach. Mayfield has a new QB but returns a lot defensively. Graves returns a majority of their team with the biggest losses on the defensive side. I went and watched Mayfield scrimmage Owensboro. I thought Mayfield looked really good but had some typical first scrimmage mishaps. Last Friday I went and watched Graves scrimmage Henderson. When we quit the situational stuff and started playing football we dominated. Graves scored 21 unanswered and then at the end of the half Henderson receiver made a great catch on a contested bomb to score. I think we are going to see a good game between two good teams. Way too early to really put a score on it, but I really like the weapons we have on offense this year. 3
PTHSalumni Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Graves County football does not get the credit it deserves. 4
Purple88 Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 I think Mayfield wins, but will be interested to see how Graves does in this one.
Subway5024 Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 If Mayfield loses against Graves and PT, how does this hold for rest of season for the Cards?

Only other team with any shot at all I feel like would be Murray. Unless McCracken or another team has dramatically improved. Worse case scenario for Mayfield is 6-3 imo and that’s if something disastrous happens. Probably projected to be 8-1 due to PT, but I think our Eagles have the next best shot at beating them this year.

The last time we changed coaches NOT named Morris (Jack), we stumbled out of the gate, but ended winning the 2A state championship. My point is this, we may lose some games while we figure out all the newness, but don’t be surprised if we are there in the end. 1

Because I am not familiar with the RPI, will losses hurt the RPI? Not just Mayfield, but all teams.
WarMemorialVet Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 Yeah it’s definitely too early to tell on Mayfield this year. I hear we are having considerable QB troubles. This game will tell a lot! This ain’t no early cupcake game to get the kinks out, they better come to play! Honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see mayfield drop this one. It’s early and we are somewhat still figuring things out. If I was graves, I would exploit that and throw EVERYTHING at us to get this first win in 15* years.
tackle trap Posted August 19, 2024 Posted August 19, 2024 The best game in WKY this week is this one. Usually a close game I like to pick the team with a proven QB so that would go to Graves. I think Mayfield is better upfront on both sides of the ball so this really is a toss up.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Mayfield struggle early but I doubt anyone will want to play the Cardinals in November.
Brown Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 For a county of 37k people, this is 2 really good programs both from Graves. I thought Mayfield- Owensboro were basically similar but both were working on new players etc. Cards break free by halftime though. Cards 38-14
TilghmanPride Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 I may try to make this one, but where will a guy wearing PT blue and white sit for this one? I do have connections to players from both teams these last several seasons, so I don't want anyone upset at me. I'm just a neutral observer, but this could be a really good game. After Graves got down big early to PT last season, they scrapped their way to a very respectable 2nd half in that game and showed a lot of toughness and as we all know, Mayfield is Mayfield, I'm looking forward to this game. 2
Oldercoach Posted August 20, 2024 Posted August 20, 2024 Until they prove otherwise, how can you ever pick anyone other than Mayfield? They have earned that level of respect. 2
