Has a team ever not won the All “A” state and then go on to win the big state?

UHA in 1992.

Shelby Valley did it with Elisha Justice.  They were coached by one of the best coaches to ever walk the sidelines in Kentucky high school basketball Coach Jason Booher.

Yep.  The night Laettner hit the shot.

UHA I know has done that.

I’m fairly certain Lyon County is the third to do this. Several already noted UHA in 1992. Paintsville also did this in 1996. They fell in the first round of the All A state tourney that year. UHA lost to Lexington Catholic in the semifinals of the All A state tourney in 1992 only to beat them in the actual state finals of the Sweet 16.

Shelby Valley is the only team to have won both in the same year, doing so in 2010.

What year did the most Class A teams make it to the state?  There were three this year, right?  Newport, Evangel, and Lyon County.  Did I miss anyone?

Congratulations to Lyon!   It’s always a feel-good story when a little county school cuts down the nets (cue Phil Collins singing Against the Odds in the background).

A fun fact that probably not a lot of people know and may not care but this core group of seniors for Lyon Co also won the KBA 6th grade middle school state tournament in Lexington. Perry moved up to varsity as a seventh grader then.

Trent Noah needs to be at UK!

Great tournament! I wasn’t able to attend this year but watched it all on TV stream.
That was a huge judgement call on the 3 point attempt by Noah late in the game. It appeared he was in the act of shooting and should have had 3 free throws, which could have cut the lead to 2. But the call was foul before the shot. Broadcasters Dave and Cameron also thought it should have been 3 free throws. It might not have made a difference in the outcome but who knows.
This was one championship game that I was for both teams to win, lol.
Congratulations to Lyon County!! Won a title for their school and county and also for the small schools around the state.

I think the correct call was made.  You often see players throw the ball toward the goal in that situation.  To me, it's a reaction to the contact. Had it gone the other way it would be even more controversial.  It's smart to try it though.

✔️ State's all-time scoring king

✔️ UK commit

✔️ Mr. Basketball

✔️ State Champion

Has there ever been a more complete career by a Kentucky high school basketball player than that of Travis Perry? At the risk of being a prisoner of the moment, I'm going to say no.

Add to that the State Tournament MVP award.  Although Perry was statistically dominated by Harlan County's Trent Noah, Perry was the best player on the championship team and his leadership, hustle and control of the game through his ability to dribble with speed and protect the ball combine to make him a worthy recipient in my view.

This is no knock on Noah at all.  Noah scored roughly 50% more points than Perry (129-88) taking one fewer shot, and made five more three-pointers (19-14) with two fewer attempts.  While Perry's shooting was good(42% FG, 39%3FG), Noah's shooting was elite (56% FG, 55%3FG).  Perry racked up more assists (19-9), while Noah snared more rebounds (29-9). Noah had a significant edge from the line in both points scored and shooting percentage: Perry (13 points on 81% shooting), Noah (32 points and 88%).  Perry had by far his best game in the finals; Noah had by far his best in the quarters, when he scored 48 points in an overtime win.  It would have been 50 but Harlan County eschewed an uncontested alley-oop as time expired.

Congratulations to Perry on the award and to Lyon County on the championship.
