That being said, I'll admit that Cal has to move on. But it's gotta be the right way. You don't want to mess up the NBA connection.  If it gets dirty, all the work with a lot of previous "Cal guys" (Davis, Wall, Towns, Murray) will be washed away at UK.

 

These kids don't chase down a particular school anymore. They're looking for a coach. Plus the whole transfer wherever, whenever stuff. I'll reiterate, UK has to keep it "clean" with Cal. Can't just run him outta town.

UK was riding high and Mitch would have been ran out of town if he hadn't retained Cal with a new contract. The lifetime part is a job as special assistant to the AD after he retires from coaching. His coaching contract is up in a few more seasons, then the lifetime part would kick in.

I totally agree with this. I’m also a Dallas Cowboys fan and this is how I feel about them, too. I just expect them to underachieve and I’m more likely to just laugh and shake my head when they lose in the postseason instead of being mad like I used to be. I have no expectations of success anymore for UK basketball.

John Calipari is never living this loss down: IMO

Calipari signed a lifetime contract at Kentucky in 2019. He’s only won one tournament game since, and also missed the field of 68 altogether back in 2021.

Calipari lost to No. 15 seed St. Peter’s in the first round of the NCAA tournament only two years ago, but that team never felt as talented as this one. This team had two stud future NBA guards with Sheppard and Rob Dillingham. It had some great veterans like Reeves. It had a clear path to the Final Four with a relatively easy draw through the bracket. Now their postseason run is over before it ever really began.

This feels like the worst loss Calipari has ever endured. It’s the type of L someone doesn’t just bounce back from. It’s always a long offseason after you lose in the NCAA tournament, but this one is going to be particularly painful for coach Cal and Kentucky.

And that's a fair view but I think the way that contract is structured was still insane.  It basically gave Calipari complete power over the AD and became his own boss.  Barnhart got taken to the cleaners and this isn't the first time he's made questionable contracts in the athletic department.

Thanks for posting. Jay Wright is preaching my take. One and done is finished. Oakland's key players were two grad students, 3 seniors and a junior. UK's best players tonight were their upperclassmen. College basketball is now a game of experienced players.

I thought about that when I did my bracket. The only game I felt good about picking UK was this round 1 game. I did pick UK to beat NC St. but it was picking with my heart more than my head. I just can't have confidence in a team that is as bad as UK was this year on defense, regardless of how good the offense is.
