What's going on at Pulaski County?

As a coach of 18 years, having experience with kids and their parents from ages 5 thru 18 in football youth through varsity, I understand exactly where he is coming from. A miserable group of parents can kill a team from the inside out. Would I have done that at the end of season banquet? Nah, I'd  definitely address it at the beginning of the next season parent meeting though. And, to take it one step further, I would include it in the participation code of conduct contract that I would have each player and parent sign. Then, when Johnny's mom or dad wants to run their mouth on social media or in the stands, they will already know the consequences.

What would be the consequences for a parent that ran their mouth on social media (or in the stands) after signing a "conduct contract?"

Anybody ever been to a sports banquet where the head coach only spoke for 3 minutes and 6 seconds? I sure as hell haven't. I can't imagine that Coach Hines didn't do more speaking about the team at ot

When I played in HS it resulted in extra conditioning for the first offense and loss of playing time after that.

Just saw this video on tiktok and most people like his message. I have no real opinion.

I don't think it's the content of the message as much as the timing and the venue.  An end of season banquet, when you should be saying goodbye to your seniors isn't really the place to make a speech about how good you are.  After the players lost a teammate during spring practice to not acknowledge him while scolding the parents just doesn't sit right for a lot of people.

I thought the tone of the video was more about the coach saying how great he is and basically how fortunate they should feel that he has turned the program around. His last comments about if you don't like it, leave seems to be getting most of the attention from everyone on here. But locally what struck a nerve was his patting himself on the back and taking all of the credit for their success. Additionally the fact that he had a player basically die on the field (actually at hospital a few days later) in front of his teammates and parents and never acknowledged him at the banquet seemed very tone deaf as well.

From what I've heard all season, there are a lot of people that think it's time for a change. It's not all coming from parents upset about playing time as much as the coach tried to throw that out there. Former players, former parents and current program supporters are all part of a group calling for change in the program.

I'll be shocked if the school administration even addresses this with him in anyway. If he leaves I'll be because he's tired of dealing with everything and sees he's no longer held up on the pedestal that he once was.

Lots of people have opinions on this, it was brought up on KSR today though they didn’t comment bc they hadn’t watched said video. I’m a short tempered person when it comes to adults, but I would hope I could keep the parents and celebration of my players seperate. Don’t know if I could depending on the situation.

Context is important ... If he spent 90% of the time in the banquet talking about the kids ...no issue.

In a way I am impressed as heck. It needs to be said. Not sure if this is the right time or not ... but that's kind of the beauty of it. It wasn't addressed to specific people that the average person is aware of.

At the same time ... if I already had a questionable opinion of this guy ... more reason to dislike.

It is pretty interesting when you consider how Pulaski deals with transfers. It was already bad before. How will they handle it now? I have a feeling not much will change if 3+ kids show up in the morning to transfer to Southwest.

I love everything about what he said. I wasn’t there, but I’m guessing these 3 minutes were just what he said, “ending on a personal note” and that the other 2 hours were all about the boys with I’m sure plenty of thank you’s to parents, support, etc.

Parents (some) can talk behind their backs amongst one another, they (some) can talk about them to their son at the dinner table and car, they (some) can even go to the administration about petty stuff that is nothing more than their own personal vendetta’s towards whatever ulterior motives that they (some) have.

He at least had the guts to say it in front of those (that it applied to) and not behind the backs like so many in their own distructive pods do at every school in the state (and, all have them).

I'd be willing to say that what was said had no effect on plenty, and then for some? It bothered. If the shoe fits, then wear it.

I have no clue about all the other stuff in terms of stopping kids from transferring. If that’s true, then I can see where that could be just a little bit contradictory. Then again, that could be him “go on. Do what you have to do. I won’t fight another transfer.”

Yeah it wasn't a very popular policy if you could imagine.

My stance was 1st offense is a meeting with myself and the AD. 2nd offense is parent suspension from the next home game. 3rd offense is indefinite suspension from home sporting events.

If a student athlete is the one spouting off, then its a meeting with myself and the coaching staff for 1st offense, game suspension for 2nd offense.

Of course, as a coach, you have to have the AD, superintendent, and school board's support in this, otherwise you have no leg to stand on.

My other technique for dealing with angry parents is the 24 hour rule: If you see something in a game, or you're angry about something, wait 24 hours before bringing it to the coach. Nothing productive gets done when acting on emotion. Cool down, think about it, and if you're still riled up, then give me a call and we can set up a meeting.

I should note, after outlining this in my opening season parent meeting, I've never had to worry about it.

24 Hour Rule is Crucial... That is our policy here at Campbellsville as well... School-Wide Policy....

In a banquet's true spirit, it is held to honor the Team, the Seniors, and other players that excelled throughout the year.

Give Thanks to the Parents and fans who showed up to the games, as well as all the district employees who support the program. It is NOT the time to discuss anything else (IMO). Boilerplate yes, but make it genuine and accurate.

That discussion is to held separately at a different time.  Sure it can be held in person, just be ready for some to not handle their emotions all that well. The coach better be ready to be humbled. Coaches that make it all about themselves and their ego are in it for the wrong reasons.

(I do not know this coach and this is not to insinuate he has an ego problem or does not care about the kids)  I am merely talking on where to have this discussion and leadership when dealing with HS athletes and their supporters.  This 3 min clip did nothing but create an opportunity to make volatile situation worse by using this approach.

In the 20 or so Banquets I have been involved in at the very end most coaches make a short statement that basically says that the  season has concluded and then sets the expectations for the current juniors.  A changing of the guard you may say.  I am assuming that the statement he made was during this time and he probably truly believes that in order for them to progress he needed to address this so it did not fester along all off season.
