4A RPI Rankings - 2023

Playing 4 teams in higher classes has certainly helped CovCath's RPI.

However, strength of schedule is not factored into the RPI.

To play along, the strength of schedule question gets tricky. CovCath hasn't played a non-district team with a really low ranking as both Boyle and Corbin have.

Using the CalPreps ranking for each non-district team played to date, CovCath has played teams currently ranked 7, 20, 25, 31, and 43 in the state for an average of 25.2.

Boyle has currently played teams ranked 9, 12, 19, 23, and 168 for an average of 46.2 (I took the Indiana team's CalPrep ranking and used where they would be ranked in Kentucky to determine their rank).

Corbin has played teams ranked 5, 23, 34, 85, 90, and 155 for an average of 65.3 (Again, I took the Ohio team's CalPrep ranking and used where they would be ranked in Kentucky to determine their rank.)

From that perspective, an argument could be made that CovCath has played the hardest schedule to date among the three.

So Boyle County’s Achilles Heel was having to play cross town rival Danville?

@theguru noted along these lines in another thread re: scheduling - teams have to adapt to the new reality of RPI. The difference between North Oldham and Boyle Co. is, at this point is only 0.0

  • Anyone else believe this will be the most exciting class to watch when round 3 hits? A lot of heavy hitters in this class.

  • Park Hills is lovely that time of year. ?️

That's a factor. The Danville game hurts Boyle's OWP component in the RPI total, which makes up 35% of the RPI.

I’m not convinced things can’t shuffle again in the East.

Another approach ~

Remove the Boyle County loss from 2A Danville's record and they're 0-8. Remove the Cov Cath loss from 2A Beechwood's record and they're 9-0. Reverse those two records and the RPI for the Rebels and Colonels would look very different.

For those interested in geography:

Boyle Co. HS to Danville HS ~ 2.4 mi.

Cov Cath HS to Beechwood HS ~ 2.3 mi.

Paducah might have scheduled themselves out of a home game in the final four, granted they make it that far, by having a bad 1A Russellville as their final opponent of the regular season.

I might have been out of the loop for a while but when did Russellville go down hill? They use to have speed and be competitive.

@BigBlue92 been a rough couple of years since the state runner up run they had and Logan County being competitive doesn’t help the Panthers either. They’re 1A football so it comes and goes in cycles, HC Mikie Benton does a good job and I hope they’re able to get back to winning football games sooner than later.

I would think that when these schedules were made both PT and Russellville were both coming off of a State Championship appearance!

If Boyle thumps Douglass, they are the heavy favorite in the 4A playoffs.

Boyle beating Douglass could definitely give them a jump it will be interesting to see the final rankings for the 4A RPI.

I agree

I'd be curious to know exactly how much the multiplier for playing up a class helped out Cov Cath this year. I don't think many people could honestly say that Cov Cath's schedule was tougher than Boyle's or Corbin's, yet RPI calculations are going to give them the #1 seed in the East, and give us a Boyle-Corbin matchup a round or two too soon.

Strength of schedule is not a factor in RPI. Classification and win/loss record are what matter. The answers to impact of playing and beating higher classification schools is here https://khsaa.org/rpi_details/?event_id=1206.

Look up WP for each team and that tells you how beating 6A schools is better than beating 4A or 5A schools. It is the reason why Cov Cath and Paducah Tighlman are above Boyle County and Corbin.

To drive the point home of how KHSAA RPI values classification over strength of opponent, Cov Cath will get the exact same game value out of beating 6A Campbell County that Boyle County will get if they beat 6A Douglass. The RPI game value is exactly the same.

Strength of schedule is not technically a factor, but opponent's winning percentage is and that's theoretically supposed to measure a team's strength of schedule.

My original point is that Cov Cath is going to secure the #1 RPI because they are able to easily schedule decent 5A and 6A schools (SK, Dixie, Ryle, Campbell County). I think a neutral observer would recognize that Boyle's schedule of Fort Gibson, Lex Cath, Douglass, LCA, Scott County was probably tougher than Cov Cath's. But, the RPI calculations are going to favor Cov Cath because of the multiplier that is given to beating larger schools.
