@theguru noted along these lines in another thread re: scheduling - teams have to adapt to the new reality of RPI. The difference between North Oldham and Boyle Co. is, at this point is only 0.0

  • Anyone else believe this will be the most exciting class to watch when round 3 hits? A lot of heavy hitters in this class.

  • Park Hills is lovely that time of year. ?️

4️⃣ 4A RPI updated for Week 7 ~

The Top 10 -

The subtle witchcraft of the algorithm continues in this class. BGP 4A #3 Cov Cath (6-0), still benefitting from a strong Class Value multiplier, remains at the top of the RPI. Six of BGP's 4A Top 10 are in a jumble behind.

Changes from last week -

3. North Oldham; +1

4. Paducah Tilghman; -1

6. Ashland; +1

7. Corbin; -1

8. Shelby Co.; +2

Newcomers -

9. Taylor Co.; +14

10. DeSales; +10

Dropped out -

16. Perry Co. Central; -7

18. Wayne Co.; -10

Cov Cath won’t get caught.

More nonsense. Cov Cath, Boyle and Corbin on the top tier, then everyone else below. There is reality and then there is RPI.

One thing about it, Boyle, Corbin and Covington Cath 2 of these will have to face each other before the championship game.

4️⃣ 4A RPI updated for Week 8 ~

? A new leader is perched at the top, as Franklin Co. and Cov Cath swap spots.

The previous Top 10 finished with an 8-1 mark Friday night. Boyle Co. had their BYE.

Changes from last week:

1. Franklin County; +1

2. Covington Catholic; -1

3. Paducah Tilghman; +1

4. North Oldham; -1

9. Taylor County; -1

Newcomer: 9. Spencer County; +2

Dropped out: 11. DeSales; -1

I thought all them middle of the road 5 and 6 A teams they play would keep them at one. That’s on me.

Yeah that "middle of the road" 5A number one RPI team from Fort Thomas.....?

That would be the fourth best team in 4A this year. ?

In the current RPI, whether you like the order or not, the top six teams are the best teams in 4A and each has a legitimate shot at being state champions.  The remaining schedule probably won’t shake up things to much, although I’m curious how a Boyle win over Freddy D would look in the final RPI.  I see Franklin County, Cov Cath, Paducah Tilghman and Corbin winning out and finishing undefeated, but they don’t really have any RPI bumper games remaining (unless you want to count Campbell County as one for Cov Cath).  Ashland is interesting in that they have Johnson Central and Simon Kenton remaining.  Could wins over those two bump them up?  Wins over those two would make them undefeated as well.  I’m curious how only playing nine games affects Corbin’s RPI.  Does the lack of a game keep them from being able to host a third round or semifinal game?

I'd be curious to know exactly how much the multiplier for playing up a class helped out Cov Cath this year. I don't think many people could honestly say that Cov Cath's schedule was tougher than Boyle's or Corbin's, yet RPI calculations are going to give them the #1 seed in the East, and give us a Boyle-Corbin matchup a round or two too soon.

Playing 4 teams in higher classes has certainly helped CovCath's RPI.

However, strength of schedule is not factored into the RPI.

To play along, the strength of schedule question gets tricky. CovCath hasn't played a non-district team with a really low ranking as both Boyle and Corbin have.

Using the CalPreps ranking for each non-district team played to date, CovCath has played teams currently ranked 7, 20, 25, 31, and 43 in the state for an average of 25.2.

Boyle has currently played teams ranked 9, 12, 19, 23, and 168 for an average of 46.2 (I took the Indiana team's CalPrep ranking and used where they would be ranked in Kentucky to determine their rank).

Corbin has played teams ranked 5, 23, 34, 85, 90, and 155 for an average of 65.3 (Again, I took the Ohio team's CalPrep ranking and used where they would be ranked in Kentucky to determine their rank.)

From that perspective, an argument could be made that CovCath has played the hardest schedule to date among the three.
