4A RPI Rankings - 2023

Strength of schedule is not a factor in RPI. Classification and win/loss record are what matter. The answers to impact of playing and beating higher classification schools is here https://khsaa.org/rpi_details/?event_id=1206.

Look up WP for each team and that tells you how beating 6A schools is better than beating 4A or 5A schools. It is the reason why Cov Cath and Paducah Tighlman are above Boyle County and Corbin.

To drive the point home of how KHSAA RPI values classification over strength of opponent, Cov Cath will get the exact same game value out of beating 6A Campbell County that Boyle County will get if they beat 6A Douglass. The RPI game value is exactly the same.

Was this post for me?

I said in the quoted post, Playing 4 teams in higher classes has certainly helped CovCath's RPI and that strength of schedule is not factored into the RPI.

@theguru noted along these lines in another thread re: scheduling - teams have to adapt to the new reality of RPI. The difference between North Oldham and Boyle Co. is, at this point is only 0.0

  • Anyone else believe this will be the most exciting class to watch when round 3 hits? A lot of heavy hitters in this class.

  • Park Hills is lovely that time of year. ?️

Adding to the conversation. Not contesting any comments.

Strength of schedule is not technically a factor, but opponent's winning percentage is and that's theoretically supposed to measure a team's strength of schedule.

My original point is that Cov Cath is going to secure the #1 RPI because they are able to easily schedule decent 5A and 6A schools (SK, Dixie, Ryle, Campbell County). I think a neutral observer would recognize that Boyle's schedule of Fort Gibson, Lex Cath, Douglass, LCA, Scott County was probably tougher than Cov Cath's. But, the RPI calculations are going to favor Cov Cath because of the multiplier that is given to beating larger schools.

Correct. In KHSAA RPI, 9-0 Sayre or 8-1 Betsy Layne are better for OWP than Douglass. That's RPI SOS.

How do these rankings affect the top 4 teams?

For the Eastern Half it looks like JC at Cov Cath and Corbin at Boyle in the 3rd round. I'm not as familiar with the Western Half and how it is likely to shake out.

No one in the west is touching Paducah Tilghman or Franklin County. Their RPIs are good enough they won’t see each other in region finals, so they’ll be the reps come state semis. Presumably Franklin County will have the honor of hosting the Boyle County/Corbin survivor while Paducah Tilghman visits CovCath. Unless something very surprising happens.

I’d complain about Boyle County/Corbin being forced to the region final round, but I guess in the old system that is what would have happened anyway.  Still, it seems like that is exactly what this system was supposed to avoid happening.

That's a loss for the KHSAA in ticket sales.  IMO Corbin is a top 2 team in 4A and we get to play them at our home.  I feel it worked out good for us.

I'd say the only thing that kept Boyle out of the #1 slot or and the very least the #2 slot was their one out of state opponent.

Which is insane - they're 9-2.  It wasn't hard to find out.  That the KHSAA just throws up their hands and says "how can we possibly calculate their W-L" is incredible.

Who could've predicted Danville finishing the season at 0-10?

I agree 100%. Douglass is not as good as they have been in years past, but they played two out of state schools and I know lost to two 4A teams that are really good. However they are behind two schools who they went on the road and defeated by 3 and 20 in Trinity and Bryan Station and they will have to go back to Station on Nov. 17th because they have the higher RPI even though Douglass has a 20 point win at Station.
