You can't trap a player the caliber of Nowell, especially when they are playing lights out.

It’s fairly easy to figure that you send your best two defenders to double the small point guard who has dribbled through your defense all night and make him give it up, let others beat you and take your chances for a few possessions and if that has to be full court double team then do it, why wait on the pick and roll at half court.

One of our two best defenders in those type of situations hasn't played in like 12 games. Wheeler was desperately needed to play that way. The personnel available would have gotten annihilated if they played like that today.

What you're saying works great in high school. It would have been extremely detrimental against Nowell.

Totally disagree but that’s just my opinion, if Reeves and Wallace can’t defend Nowell together and make him give it up, then Nowell at 5feet 8inches is destined for NBA greatness!

Reeves is not a very good defender. Leaving the big at the three point line is a way better option than leaving their off guard, or god forbid Keyonte Johnson.

Only thing I think they could have remotely done was maybe throw Toppin on him and hope his length bothered him. But he probably would've blown past him.

It was just that dudes night. He hit some tough and deep threes. And even then, they were right there until that Mous whatever guy hit his three, followed by Keyonte's step back.

End of the day, turnovers and Toppin and Reeves going 1-21 before the game going out of reach, is why Kentucky lost. Not Cal.

So we stay in man to man in the second half after we are in the bonus. Oscar going past the free throw line or out to the wing every time and their PG beating his guy off the dribble each time. That means the best rebounder in college isn’t close to the hoop and late to the party each shot. They were 0-13 before the first 3 went down. It’s not that hard. Play a tight zone and force to make the deep shots. They did hit the tough ones at the end but even with our own abysmal offense (all season by the way) we should’ve won the game at rhe FT line, we had the bonus over half the second half. Cal refuses to adjust. If you’ve even coach 3rd grade basketball you know when your guy doesn’t have it and Reeves didn’t yet Cal refused to have his guys drive to the hoop.

They drove to the hoop pretty much the whole second half until late when Reeves and Frederick both shot what I would call really ill advised threes. 

Cal certainly didn't run a play for those two shots. 

They literally drove to the hoop and got the ball inside to Oscar 85% or more of the 2nd half.

Are you against a zone defense when they score 40 points in the paint and are 0-13 from 3? 

I love hearing from all these basketball wizards on here. Cal is not perfect but to put this loss on him is ridiculous.

 

College basketball is about Jimmy’s and Joe’s not X’s and O’s  and this UK team is lacking overall talent. 
 

The 6th greatest 3 point shooter in UK Basketball History (statistically speaking) goes 0-9 until 45 seconds left in the game and we want to lay the blame at Cal’s feet? He can’t hit shots for them. This shooter is ahead of names like Booker, Murray, Chapman, Delk, Monk, Meeks, and Sparks yet can’t buy one. Sometimes that happens. Coaches don’t have a secret special offense for when your best shooter can’t throw it in the ocean. 
 

This loss hurts as I kept thinking we were going to hit some shots and put them away. If we get any production out of Reeves and Toppin on offense it doesn’t matter that we don’t trap the PG like it is a middle school game or that we had double the turnovers we win. We played well enough to win, we just didn’t shoot well enough to win.

Glad to see somebody feels the same way I do about Cal, his extraordinary recruiting covered up his lack of coaching for years, I would say that his lack of getting of 4-5 of the top 10 recruits has exposed that!!  K-State’s game plan was so obvious, get Oscar out to the 3 pt line chasing Nowell and Cal sat on his behind and let it happen, thought I was watching UConn in 2014 again with Johnson chasing Walker and Holloway all night, just pitiful coaching, again!!!

Yes on the shooting but it’s games like this when your team needs you the most and Cal fell wwwaaayy short, again!!  Like I said, none of those kids are making 10 mil/year to make adjustments
