If you check the final complete game stats even though Kentucky had twice as many turnovers as K-State most of Kentucky's was in the first half (11 out of their 16) Kentucky actually outscored K-State 15-14 on points off turnovers. They both had 40 points in the paint and Kentucky outscored them by 10 on 2nd chance points (17-7). The bottom line they made some big key shots before we had to foul (especially the back to back 3's) and we missed several wide open shots the last 3 minutes then they did what a good team should make their FT's down the stretch.

If you find a way to make the 5” 8” point guard give the ball up, you can stand missing shots and making turnovers, just shameful to let that happen, so let’s praise Cal and look forward to the same results again next year.

Yes, and the double came with Oscar or Livingston?? Those guys aren’t the right duo for doubling at mid court and leaving their guys open for lob dunks.

Exactly what I’ve been saying, why didn’t Cal make an in game adjustment then???????
Because he practically NEVER DOES!!!

Cal didn’t make an adjustment, that’s the way they played it the whole game and got KILLED by it!!

So KSU scored 14 points off turnovers. Then also got what about 8 points in free throws at the end of the game when UK had to foul. So take away that and KSU was at 53 points for the game the defense gave up. Now obviously there would be a few people off turnovers in a game. So even just half of that still puts KSU only at 60 points. People act like the defense was horrible.  When the defense IMO wasn’t that bad today. UK until his step back three shut down KSU best scorer all game in Johnson, and was keeping others in check.

Now the pg for them was awesome and made big time plays. He also hit a two really tough threes when UK had great defense.

Some of you seem to think if they didn’t go zone that means they didn’t adjust. UK tried a few things in this game to slow him down. They even tried trapping him in the first half, and yet people complain say they didn’t do that right. Then in the second half they basically went away from that too, since it wasn’t working. As I said before you all do realize KSU had another star player right that they basically kept under control all game? Sometimes you just have to give credit where credit it do. That pg made some big plays and hit some very big and tough shots. Including getting two free throws when he was passing the ball.

Now if UK had won. KSU could have also pointed to turnovers and cold shooting most of the game for why they lost too. The difference was they finally hit a few threes at the end, while UK had theirs go in and out.

People can feel that Cal shouldn’t be the coach anymore and that’s fine. However, it’s now to the point where some of you all just criticize just to criticize and blind to everything else.

IMO the biggest criticism for this game of Cal to me it is a few of the lineups he used in the first half at the end that KSU went on a run against. I know we had some foul issues, but having a lineup of Collins, Ware, Theiro in at one point is just not a good lineup. Cal needed to chance it and have Toppin and Wallace in at that point still. Which I would agree that he should have at least adjusted and went zone at the end of the first half to allow him to play Wallace and Toppin while protecting against a foul with their zone defense. So to me that is my biggest complaint on Cal for this game is more so his decision to go with a lineup towards the end of the first half  that simply  was not going to do much at all.

  • Hot take. I think Calipari did a decent coaching job this season. Mid-year it was bleak and the crew could have mailed it in. They adjusted on the fly, played the stretch run without a PG and put toge

Glad to see somebody feels the same way I do about Cal, his extraordinary recruiting covered up his lack of coaching for years, I would say that his lack of getting of 4-5 of the top 10 recruits has exposed that!!  K-State’s game plan was so obvious, get Oscar out to the 3 pt line chasing Nowell and Cal sat on his behind and let it happen, thought I was watching UConn in 2014 again with Johnson chasing Walker and Holloway all night, just pitiful coaching, again!!!

Some of you all forget Cal was being very successful long before he started having teams full of one and dones on his roster once he got to UK. He didn’t have teams full of one and dones at Umass or Memphis and yet won many games made final fours with them too. You all act like he knows nothing about basketball, when he truly was winning even before he got here.

Now has the game started to change some over the last few years and he is possibly falling behind? That could be fair to discuss. However, some of you act like he has only ever had success when he came to UK and started having stacked rosters.

Which by the way that 2014 team had no business even making the title game. The twins were never as good as advertised. Their best defensive player  WCS was was out from sweet 16 on. The only truly NBA level talent on that team for that run was Randel. Yet per usual Cal gets no credit from you all. He must have been doing something right to get that team to the finals, and beating the defending champs and out coaching Pitino along the way that year.

What about he West Virginia regional final when he allowed his guys to keep shooting 3s when they  were ice cold instead of feeding Boogie? What about 2011 when they designed a play for Liggins to take the last shot in the final four instead of Knight? In 2014 when they did absolutely nothing to shut down UCONNs only offensive threat? 2015 when they didn’t let KAT touch the ball on every possession in the second half? His teams historically choking at the FT line in crucial tournament moments? At some point where there is smoke, there is fire? He exploited the one and done rule for 5 seasons and had a great run, but since then it’s showing his used car salesman approach.

Yes on the shooting but it’s games like this when your team needs you the most and Cal fell wwwaaayy short, again!!  Like I said, none of those kids are making 10 mil/year to make adjustments

Fell way short by not telling them to shoot better?

What should he have done offensively different?

Reeves missing shots. CJ not shot well all year. Toppin can’t buy one. Oscar is limited offensively.

You say he fell way short and love to paint broad strokes but give nothing as a true response as what he should do. Sometimes as a coach you have to play the hand you are dealt. Your cards are your cards. This UK team was flawed. Is Cal to blame? I say partly yes, but some of it was beyond his control.

We played well enough to win the game. We played well enough defensively to win the game. We didn’t shoot well enough to win, but I’m sure you have a special offense that would have fixed everything and that is why you make $10 million a year coaching.

As just stated some of you all act like he ever only had success once he came to UK and had rosters full of one and dones. He was making final fours before coming to UK. So he obviously was doing something right. Including not once but twice beating Pitino along the way. Which since any time a team loses that means the coach didn’t do well and was out coached. That means he out coached the one and only Pitino twice to do it. Wouldn’t think that would be possible with a coach that knows nothing as some seem to suggest.

The simple answer is he is not Pitino. Pitino left before things would have eventually came down some. So fans never had a chance to get tired of him. So they want a coach to do things like him. Hence people even talking about needing press on defense in this thread. People literally have never been able to move on from Pitino. Even though Cal has even beat him twice in the tournament at UK. It always all comes back around to Pitino in some of our fans thinking and what they want.

You sound like me, making all my points!!!

Marcus Camby at Umass???  DOMINANT in college!!!  Derrick Rose at Memphis??  DOMINANT in college!!  Anybody that thinks Cal got the UK job because of his coaching is SADLY MISTAKEN, he got it because of his recruiting, HE EVEN SAID SO AT HIS PRESSER, “I’m here because I can recruit the best of the best!!!”

Ok, I’ll be specific, really nothing offensively he could’ve done, but when you allow the other team to have Oscar continually chasing their pt guard out around the 3 pt line by your defensive game plan you’re falling WWAAYY short in your job, do what you should’ve in that 1 area, keep everything else the same and you STILL win the game!!

Are you against a zone defense when they score 40 points in the paint and are 0-13 from 3?

I've accepted a long time that if Calipari is the coach, we aren't seeing zone defenses. Would I like to see some mixed in, yes.

What does that have to do with my response to you about how 85% of our offense was driving to the basket in the 2nd half. On offense, he literally adjusted and had them do what you said you wanted them to do.

Offensively I agree with you, really nothing more he could’ve done, his game plan defensively was absolutely pathetic!!

Reeves makes 2 shots and Toppin makes 1 before the last mins of the game, they win. Its that simple.

But yes, terrible coaching again. Let's burn Cal's house down.

I assume you would say Pitino is a great coach correct? I also assume you would say Pitino would have done something from having a guard dominant the game right to try to make someone else beat them correct?

Yet if it was so easy to just take someone away. Then how come Pitino allowed Miles Simon to score 30 points on UK to win the title in 97. Should have been easy to stop him, or at least you all sure seem like it is easy to come up with stuff to stop people.

At the end of the day sometimes players just make great plays. Just like today two of his threes the pg made were great defensive plays and yet he still made them.

At the end of the day UK once again lost the game because of turnovers and cold shooting from two its best offensive players.
