Just saw this hit the wire that due to low turnout Newport has canceled their 2023 season.

Sad day for sure.

I’m hearing baseball numbers are down in other areas too. I’ve heard Boone County may only be fielding a varsity team this year. The death of community baseball and rise of select, travel teams is starting to have an effect in areas with lower socioeconomic demographics. I fear we will see more schools struggling to field teams.

Didn’t know about this until a couple hours ago. Sad for sure.

Can those Newport students that wanted to play go to another school and play if they so desire?

I applaud them, better than playing several games and then dropping.

They would have to physically move into a new school district's boundaries.

I don't think that's true because they're not offering baseball.  A kid from Mason Co several years ago wrestled for Campbell because there was no program then.  

 

That rule could have changed .  That was probably 10 years ago.

Newport has one of the best setups of a field I've seen.  Nice seating area and looks great from above.

Not necessarily true, especially if they don't have any varsity time in baseball at Newport. 

Maybe new cath can play there all year.

It does look cool but it is a pretty short porch!  Hard hit pop flys are home runs!  I guess that's fun for the kids.

 

Fun fact about NHS baseball. The Wildcats won the 1st two KHSAA sanctioned state tournaments. 1940 n 1941.
