I just glanced at a "news report" that claimed this is the 2025 to 2028 Alignment.  Is that correct or is this just for 2025 and 2026?

02/20/24 – Board of Control Approves Draft of 2025, 2026 Football Alignment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: FEB. 20, 2024

The KHSAA Board of Control conducted its fifth regularly scheduled meeting of the 2023-24 academic year on Tuesday in Lexington, approving an initial draft football realignment that would be effective for two years starting with the 2025 season.

With the approval of an initial draft, a survey of all member schools will be conducted to determine postseason participation for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Pending member school feedback upon distribution of the alignment draft, any appeals and potential adjustments will be finalized at the next regularly scheduled Board meeting in May.

Each year, Board members are reminded that the officers for the following year are elected at the fifth meeting of the year. The Board annually elects a president-elect from its membership to serve the following year and then transition to the role of president in the second year following. On Tuesday, the Board selected Warren County Public Schools District Athletic Director Greg Howard as its newest Board of Control President-Elect.

"With the release of a new two-year football alignment draft, we are eager to gather feedback from member schools ahead of the next time our Board meets," said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. "Our Board represents the interests of a diverse range of constituents all across the state, but it is vital to hear directly from our members regarding our efforts to finalize an alignment that makes the most sense for the next two years. 

"I would also like to formally congratulate Mr. Howard on his election as Board President-Elect," Tackett said. "I am in firm agreement with his peers among the Board that he was an ideal candidate for the role."

I’ll go out on a limb and say Beechwood could rest their starters (given they have the numbers) for all of district play.

40 teams, just like the others. Just exceptionally long names for several of the teams! Something County Central for everyone!

Same district as 2023-24, with the exception of losing Carroll County and adding St. Henry.

I would definitely say that.  RPI will take care of some of that, though, when the playoffs happen.

I thought I had seen somewhere that the alignment was going back to 4 years after the current 2 year run, as this was just to get them out of using the covid enrollment #s.

Also, why do they not divide the total teams by 6 to set the classes?  Would that not help solve at least some of the 6 team districts?

Great question. There have always been just 32 teams in Class 1A and 6A since going to six classes in 2007. The reason given was the smallest schools in 1A are very small so you limit the numbers so they don't have to compete against so many big schools and the biggest in 6A are very large so you limit the numbers so there aren't as many smaller schools in the class.

For instance, using the 2019-22 alignment (since Covid did a number on 23-24), the smallest school in Class 1A (Fulton City) had 43 boys, the largest (Fort Knox) had 191. That's over 4x larger. In Class 6A, the smallest was Marshall County with 727 boys, the largest was St. Xavier with 1344. That's 2x larger. Even if you only look at the largest 6A public school for that cycle (Henry Clay), they had 1187 boys, which is still 450 more kids - a gap twice as wide as that of any school in Classes 2A-5A.

So to answer the question, the gap between largest and smallest in Class 1A and 6A is extremely wide. By only placing 32 teams in the class, the KHSAA has attempted to at least shrink that gap just a bit.

Just seems like 3-4 more teams per class in 1 & 6 really isn't making that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.  As I think you'd rather get rid of 6 team districts if at all possible.

Making all the classes even wouldn't necessarily get rid of 6 team districts. Geography is the issue that drives 6 team districts, not the number of schools in the class. It would only work if one or two of the teams in the six team districts were big/small enough to move up/down a class. 

Imagine how many 4A schools would be petitioning to play up in 5A if that were still possible. 

Boyle County, Paducah Tilghman, Covington Catholic, Highlands, Corbin, Johnson Central, Ashland, and Franklin County. Murderers row. Not to mention 6 of those teams named are in the East.

Some quality teams in there.

Poor Western and Thomas Nelson. Hard to see either ever making the playoffs in a district like that and almost guarantees a losing season unless things really shift in a short amount of time. almost seems unfair to those kids
