  • Special teams projects don't get this many high-level offers from power 5 schools. As far as size, he's plenty tall, and has a frame that could easily add 20 lbs, which puts him in the 240-250lbs rang

Not bad considering he missed a good portion of the season!

He’s more like 190 pounds, not 230,  based off his wrestling weight class.

40 pounds is a big margin, but one of the long-term complaints you'll hear about wrestling is the fact that wrestlers are always coached to cut weight big time prior to the weigh ins at the beginning of the season so they end up in as low a weight class as possible. Some people take that too far.

One of my college roommates played football and wrestled in high school, and he talked about how as soon as football season ended, he was running 6 miles a day while his daily diet was a protein shake in the morning, and then nothing but a can or two of green beans the rest of the day. He'd keep that up until weigh ins, and then he was trying to pack his muscle and weight back up for wrestling season once they had him classified for weight.

TL;DR - I'd guess he's trying to weigh in as low as possible for wrestling, so his weight could vary from football season to wrestling season.

He has the size. That gets him consideration. He is athletic. If the power 5 D1 schools look closely and truly consider him, I think he gets offers.

I get it. I wasn’t trying to downgrade the kid. I think he is a great football player. Definitely the best player on the offensive side of the ball for CCH. I just know CCH has a history of inflating players weights on the football team. I kind of laughed when I heard 230.

Didn't think you were. All good, buddy.

CCH was a different team after he went down. He is a game changer. The Beechwood tape will show you that. He should be a monster on both sides of the ball come August.

He’s eligible to wrestle as low as 190, but according to his fat test he started the season wrestling heavyweight (up to 285) and according to Trackwrestling, he’s wrestled every event at that weight, which means he weighs at least 216.  I haven’t seen him this year but based on what I see on Track, he won’t be anywhere near 190 this year. The current rules no longer allow big weight cuts, and even then it has to be done in a controlled manner. The days of massive, dangerous weight cutting in wrestling are over, and very few high school coaches encourage large weight cuts. This is true even at the college level (I know because my son is a former college wrestler and I'm a former wrestling coach). I'd guess the lowest he'll wrestle this year is 215, and the coaches at Cov Cath do a good job, and I can guarantee they aren't encouraging him to cut big weight. It doesn't (and won't) help him or the team. He's the only kid that I see that can wrestle heavyweight for them.

I wish more football players would wrestle. The skills that make you a good wrestler like having flexible hips, balance, agility, and especially understanding how to use leverage to your advantage translate perfectly to the football field. Those benefits coupled with constantly forcing someone to move the way you want them to against their will or escape an opponent trying to do the same to you is invaluable.

Willie is going to be an absolute monster on both sides of the ball causing all kinds of problems for other teams.  He is an impact player who will swing games for The Colonels.

If only more football coaches felt that way ?
