Why would a football coach be against wrestling?

  • Special teams projects don't get this many high-level offers from power 5 schools. As far as size, he's plenty tall, and has a frame that could easily add 20 lbs, which puts him in the 240-250lbs rang

Some coaches are against anything other than their sport.  They may not always transparently express it but when you know you know.

There are a few "reasons". First, some coaches are not happy with their players participating in other sports as it affects their offseason weight program. Second is the outdated belief that wrestlers have to cut weight. Another is fear of injury. None are really valid, and not all coaches feel this way. But it's enough to prevent many from entering the sport.

Ahh, the old "sure you can play any sport you want, so long as you don't miss a single one of my workouts or practices" trick.

Or did you mean the old "sure you can play any sport you want, just don't ever expect me to start you" trick?

Both tricks are nixed by the "well I guess you can play any sport you want, because you're naturally talented enough to be at least a 2 year starter on my team" magic pass.

Not that I know any school that has ever had such a problem. Especially not if the AD tells everyone that none of the coaches will ever say anything like that and if they do, then someone needs to tell him immediately.

Do you or anyone know what weight Willie wrestles at and what weight he played (or figures to play) at?

Wrestled at 190 last year.

I'm told he is 220.   I saw him at the Highlands vs CCH basketball game, and in my uneducated opinion he looks bigger than that.

I haven't seen him, but he's currently wrestling Heavyweight, ranked #11 in the state. Which means he weighs more than 217 lbs (215 is the next weight class down and all wrestlers get a two pound allowance after Christmas). I've been told he could easily make the next lower weight class, so that would mean he's probably no more than 225 or so. I heard he's happy at that weight and not interested in dropping, even though he'd have a better chance at placing at state in the lower weight class. Heavyweights can weigh as much as 287, so he's giving up some weight in most of his matches.

It sounds like the perfect training for this football season.

Because they’re morons.

All you have to do is look at the success that Johnson Central has had in both sports to see that wrestling doesn't affect your ability to play football.

Or the NFL.

It doesn’t necessarily mean he weighs more than 217.  You can wrestle up a class, so if he wrestles HWT, it means he at least weighs more than 192.  Hopefully for him, he does weigh 225.
