What your thoughts on this? We’ve thought over the years that a couple of districts had the two best teams in the class before the RPI system was implemented.

Examples for this year are

1A Pikeville vs. Hazard or Raceland vs Paintsville

2A None

3A Paducah Tilgman vs. Union County or Bardtown vs. Elizabethtown Or Belfry vs. Lawrence County

4A Boyle County vs. Lexington Catholic or Central vs. Franklin County

5A Bowling Green vs. South Warren or Covington Catholic vs. Highlands or Pulaski County vs. Southwestern

6A Saint Xavier vs. Manual or Trinity vs. Ballard

Tell is your thoughts and options and if you think it happens.

I’m curious as to why Highlands is included in this example? While I have even said I think this is one of the more talented Highland teams in awhile, and that they may get over the hurdle and beat CovCath this year. The fact is they have finished 3rd or 4th in their own district every year, since this current realignment happened. So I think we should wait to see if they can even finally finish in the top 2 in their own district, before including them in a discussion of being one of the last two teams left in the state.

If any is possible I would think it would be Boyle Co and Lexington Catholic. Wouldn’t that be interesting if you didn’t get district championship trophy but you got a state I would gladly take it.

When Boyle gets healthy and most of their players back it will be a different ball game.

South had the clock running on Highlands in the 2nd quarter. Can we please stop pretending they’re a 5A contender this year?

I think Boyle County/Lexington Catholic would be the most likely. Pikeville/Hazard could happen but I believe whoever loses their game next week will fall far enough in the RPI that Raceland would host one of them in a hypothetical semifinal game and would probably be the favorite.

Not in 3A.  E-Town would have to win a 2nd round game at CAL, or PT/Union/Glasgow/etc. would have to win 3rd round games at CAL and Bardstown.  Just not likely.

I think Boyle and Lexington Catholic are both good enough to do it but the current RPI says no.  For that to happen 1 team would have to fall to #4 and that's not going to happen or 1 team go to #1 and that's going to be difficult to pass Corbin with the remaining schedule.  IMO they are locked in for a 3rd. round meeting.  Boyle could beat FD and Lex Cath lose to Scott Co. and switch positions.  I find that highly unlikely though.  Planning on being in Lexington Friday November 18th.  for a rematch!

District 4 when Somerset and LCA went at it. And at one time it was LCA, Somerset and Danville. Somerset and Danville have been down for a few years now.

St. X and Manual are #1 and #2 in RPI so they wouldn't meet until championship if they both win in 3rd and 4th rounds. Manual will have to get through Male which they could do. St. X could see a matchup with Trinity in semifinals if they get that far. A lot of football to be played between now and then so tough to predict with the parity in 6A.

You gotta play the games, but CAL has to be the prohibitive 3A favorite this year.

I remembered this thread and went looking for it.  It did indeed happen but the matchup that took place was not one that was thought of early on.

Bullitt East 28 Male 27

Same district.

I like how the new setup allows this to happen.  Sometimes the two best teams in the state aren't that far from each other geographically.

I agree.  I think there was a couple of years Boyle and LexCath might have both made it, if it had been possible at the time.

Same for LCA and Somerset a few years back when they were in the same district.
