Will Smith and Chris Rock at the Oscars

Yep. Really it's cheap and lazy comedy. And people's appearances often are made fun of when we don't agree with them, or dislike them or their beliefs. Again, Chris Rock is way too talented and good at what he does to throw those type of cheap zingers at people for laughs.

Comics have been doing that style forever.  Don Rickles comes to mind.  That said, Rock may have been embolden by Ricky Gervais' performance a few years ago.

  • Will Smith looks like the clown in this to me, and it's not because he slapped him. It's because he laughed and then, after a look of disgust from Jada, apparently got so enraged he had to walk on sta

I think this spurs another conversation that hasn't been talked about enough with slapgate. Why wasn't Smith immediately escorted out of the building? To me that was the most appalling part with all of this. The fact he was allowed to remain in the audience is not a good look and just speaks to the Hollywood hypocrisy that has always existed. We can debate all day whether Rock's comments were appropriate, but I am not sure how anyone can say Smith acted in a way that shouldn't have had him kicked out of the building.

Right. You can be certain that if Average Joe gets up in a comedy club and slaps the comedian for insulting his wife, Average Joe will be leaving the club with a police escort and new bracelets. Smith's reaction was not appropriate. I can understand him getting mad about it, but a slap across the face was not warranted.

And even if you are in the "this was warranted" camp (millions of people), I think we should all be in lock-step that Rock should have been protected as a performer and Smith should have been shown the exit.

I would say the reason Smith was not escorted out is nobody knew if it was real or not. I wasn't sure if it was staged or real until Smith gave his acceptance speech. I hear some people still saying that they think it was staged.

Smith's words after the assault should have erased any doubt about the authenticity of the attack.  We all know if any of us walked up there and did the same thing we would have been put in jail.

Maybe after he said it the second time some people started to think it was real but I was watching and I still wasn't sure. After Smith's first shout of profanity people were still smiling thinking it was all an act. I honestly don't think any actor would have been kicked out in that environment. Haven't there been situations in the past when protesters got on stage at the Oscars?  I am sure they got escorted out but they made it on stage and everyone knew it was not an act.

I can certainly understand there being some confusion.

I get the confusion. I was confused. Rock was confused as came on stage, probably thought he was coming to take the mic to joke around.  I also get there is the conspiracy theory faction that will never accept it as real. But once the initial dust settled, when it was clear Rock was unsettled and Will Smith was an emotional wreck, security should have hauled him out to Hollywood Boulevard.

I get the confusion. Nothing like this has happened before. But Rock’s reaction made it clear that this was real. He was clearly and visibly shaken.

Sounds like a leadership issue but considering the source I am not the least bit surprised.

Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars but refused.

The Academy is currently holding a disciplinary hearing.

At the same time, Chris Rock on stage in Boston with his stand up comedy act. Will he comment on it?

Well in my mind, that sure voids any apology he tried to offer in his speech.

That doesn't change my opinion. Look at this way. Let's say you get a call from your child's teacher that he/she made the same type of joke about a fellow classmate who has alopecia. Do you give your kid a high five and share a chuckle together or do you give him/her a talk about saying hurtful things to people?

I wonder when they asked him to leave? Before or after his acceptance speech?

According to one article I read this morning, he touched on it, but it was not "part" of the show.  Apparently he said something along the lines of "So, how was your weekend?", but told the crowd he had the show already written ahead of the Oscars.  Evidently he got a 2 or 3 minute standing ovation even before the show started.

Here's all I need to know about the situation.  Chris Rock apologized to Wanda Sykes (one of the 3 hosts for the show), for taking the attention away from them (as 3 women comedians), and that any attention was going to be focused on this event.  That's upper-level thinking right there.

Will Smith screwed up several times.  The first was laughing at the joke in the first place.  The second was feigning outrage over it just seconds afterwards.  Third was not obeying Oscar staff when they asked him to leave.  And fourth, was not apologize to Chris, by name, during his speech after the win.  Not a good look, at all.
