Notes:

-The All “A” region tournament created a “moving day/week” sort of vibe.  We’d been mostly static in the ranks, but a variety of results – some quite surprising – could not be ignored.  Chief among the movers was Todd County Central.  The Rebels are in the midst of a fantastic year – their 14-2 record is the best in the region.  They currently have tallied just four fewer wins this season than they had the previous three combined.  They haven’t exactly played a murder’s row on their schedule, and they had a comparatively easy schedule in the All “A”, but the fact remains they were the last team standing in the tournament, knocking off Metcalfe County by five in the final to take home their first All “A” regional since 2004.  They’ll take part in the state tournament in a week and a half, but this week they’ll have the chance to consolidate their rank and position themselves for a real move when they host Franklin-Simpson in a key 13th District matchup.

-One more note on the Rebels – they’ve allowed only 43 PPG this year.  Granted, that is aided by three games against Foundation Christian Academy, none of which has seen FCA reach 20 points.  Still, remove those three games and they’re still only allowing 50 PPG.  They are making hay on the defensive end.

-Clinton County is a bit of a hard luck loser in the ranks, dropping a pair of spots with the loss to Metcalfe County.  If it had been Metcalfe County that took the All “A”, Clinton County probably only drops to fifth, but Todd Central was too hard to ignore.  Clinton County’s road win at Metcalfe County trumps the Hornets’ neutral site win this week, hence the Bulldogs staying ahead by a single spot.  Clinton County has suddenly lost three of five, but they remain well positioned in the 16th District race, where they have still not suffered an official loss – this week’s result won’t count towards seeding.

-A potentially very impactful scenario is developing in the 14th District. Warren Central, so dominant in their win against Bowling Green almost two weeks ago, has not played since.  First a snow storm wiped out their game against South Warren, and then they experienced two Covid cancellations.  Those came in two district games, the first a scheduled home date with Greenwood, and the second a road trip to Warren East.  That means currently they are officially 1-2 in district play.  The KHSAA guidelines (https://khsaa.org/08-18-21-updates-and-reminders-on-schedule-change-and-score-reporting) advise that “In the case of a COVID cancelation without the game being rescheduled, the game will be recorded as a forfeit by the team not affected by the virus.” If the game is rescheduled, “The original contest will remain to keep the accuracy of the COVID count, but the forfeit will be removed and the game will not factor into standings and RPI calculations.”  That means if the teams come to an agreement to reschedule, then Warren Central will have a chance to reverse those losses.  But what if they don’t? And potentially more interestingly, what if those teams choose not to? There would be a lot of temptation to take the bird in the hand, if that’s what those programs wanted to do.  For Greenwood, it would hand them a critical road win at a venue that they’ve historically struggled at.  It would mean that Greenwood likely would clinch the #1 seed with a win against Bowling Green and then against Warren Central in a couple of weeks – both on their homecourt.  That top seed could very well mean an extremely likely trip to region and the inside track on a run to the finals.  For Warren East, it would give them a win against an opponent that has won 18 in a row against them, and while frankly that probably still isn’t going to get them out of the 4/5 game in the district tournament, it certainly doesn’t hurt their chances.  It raises some very interesting questions.  The intent of the rule is to prevent teams from ducking opponents under the guise of Covid.  But naturally, Warren Central would be highly motivated to play those games, so they’re not ducking anyone.  Should Greenwood and Warren East be compelled to play? They both seemed healthy at the time – what if the rescheduled date their teams weren’t healthy and disadvantaged in a way they weren’t previously? It wasn’t their fault the game was delayed, but it would become their problem later on.  Just a fascinating/frustrating scenario depending on your interests.  I’d also be interested if county leadership would step in, compel the teams to find a date by any means.  A lot to watch – but as it stands today, Warren Central could find themselves facing a scenario where they lose the #1 seed never losing a single game on the actual court.

-On the court, this is a very big week for the 14th, as Bowling Green hosts Warren Central on Tuesday and then visits Greenwood on Friday.  Especially if the Covid cancellations stand, that means Bowling Green can essentially wrap up the top seed with a pair of wins this week.  They’d stand at that point with just one loss in the district, all their games against Warren Central and Greenwood behind them, and only a game apiece against South Warren and Warren East remaining.  They’ve won 55 in a row against Warren East – they’ve never lost against South Warren.  Will Warren Central be rusty on Tuesday? Will Greenwood be able to defend homecourt against their nemesis? Big games.  South Warren visits Warren East as well.  South is likely already locked into the 4/5 game, but for East, it represents a must-win in their attempt to escape.

I’m not certain on that. I would judge it has been 9-10 days since onset for everyone. They’ve got another couple of days for completion of protocols. Of course, they’re likely going to be incredibly rusty, tired, etc if they are available. No practice or play for nearly two weeks is no state going into a game on this level.

Great info Dfire!

I'm really impressed with Todd County Central.  LIkely one of their best teams in what a couple decades?

In the 14th, that really is a fascinating drama brewing.  If I'm Greenwood and East, why play the reschedule? I guess it depends on where your allegiances lie.  It's going to be a great finish to the season and district and regions!  Big game tonight!
