Supplemental School Year Program (SSYP) Guidance from the KHSAA

Actually it makes perfect academic sense.  Students are given a "do over year" because they feel that this year they were not able to learn what they needed to learn in the classes they took.  The need to "do over". If they are ready to take advantage of advanced courses they are not in need of a do over they are ready to move on.  If I remember right at least one fo the districts said they had to do over the core curriculum not the elective classes.  They elective classes is where they can explore interests.

http://Check out this article from Courier Journal: EXCLUSIVE: JCPS school board poised to approve 'do-over' year for hundreds of students https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/education/2021/05/18/jcps-school-board-poised-to-approve-do-over-year/5023420001/

Over 700 JCPS students have requested a supplemental year and it’s expected that the JCPS board will approve based on polling board members. JCPS Superintendent also supports the supplemental year.

That's a lot of kids to make space for.

So are kids going to have to repeat their classes or are they going to be permitted to attend high school and take classes at a local college?

They have to take classes that are very similar to or supplement the classes they took this year.  Seniors this year who repeat are not eligible for dual credit scholarships and must pay per-credit hour tuition set by the college.

Warren County (Greenwood, South Warren, Warren Central, Warren East) is officially OUT on 5th year seniors.

It's interesting to see what systems are allowing for this and which systems are not.  I thought there'd be greater demand at the elementary level, but that's not what I'm seeing locally.  Danville had more push to redo the high school year (17) than the elementary (9).

I would think elementary and middle school with the development of learning.
