11th Region Officiating Bias: Real or Imagined?

Featured Replies

I have watched some 11th Region Basketball this year (and in the past) and it sure is good to be the 11th Region team when you are playing someone from out of region.

I have also read comments here on BGP questioning 11th Region officiating.

Additionally I have talked to a couple of coaches from outside the 11th Region that go from laughter to anger about the officiating.

Finally, and maybe the biggest indictment of 11th Region officiating, was listening to the Prepspin announcers recently (anyone that pays attention knows they are 11th Region/Lexington homers) question the 11th Region officiating.

Is the 11th Region Officiating Bias real or imagined?

I am going with real.

How about you?

Just a quick side note you might want to change thread title to 10th and 11th Region if I’m not mistaken both regions are covered by the same officials. The bluegrass officials association.

My take on this would be IMAGINED. I do think that some of this took place years ago in maybe all regions, but feel that today it has pretty much gone away. My biggest problem is when a whistle blower is totally out of position when making a call, happens a lot.

Is the issue that they are out of position or that the call they make is incorrect?

My experience suggests that:

1) they take care of their own.

2) there is some favorable treatment to those located east and south of the 10th/11th regions.

3) there’s not much love for Louisville-area schools.

(this holds for high school and spring/summer ball in the Lexington area)

Well that's a tough one, but in my opinion some of the calls are wrong.

I usually don't have a problem if someone "out of position" makes a correct call. My issue would be with the closest official for not making the call. But bad calls out of position are a double no-no.

This. And it's not just limited to certain regions.

As mentioned, it is important to note that the BBA covers the 10th and the 11th, meaning a larger pool of officials. In theory, an official trying to climb up the grading scale in such a crowded pool would want to ingratiate themselves to their regional coaches more so than other regions simply because there is more competition. I honestly don’t know (and really couldn’t know unless they all admitted to it) that this comes into play, but it sets up the 10th and 11th for a higher degree of favoritism when regional teams are playing out of region teams. It’s just a step up from the concept that all regional teams get favoritism over out of region teams because only one coach there will actually be ranking them.

12th region refs love to call a lot of fouls and it is nothing to see both teams in the double bonus in the 1st and 2nd half. Mercer played Mason Saturday at GRC and I would assume they were 10th/11th region refs. They let them play and there were very few fouls called. Players and fans would take this approach of letting them play any day over a foul fest/ free throw shooting contest like every game in the 12th region. To me the 13th region is the hardest place to win on the road when it comes to referees. 13th region teams will be dominant at home and average when they play away games out of the 13th region.

From what I have watched over the years each region takes care of their own. What my biggest concern is how different the game is called from region to region. What officials watch for or focus on. Shouldn't be that much difference from region to region.

I think the inconsistency in how the game is called is the biggest difference from region to region. And the teams actually contribute to that difference, because the styles of play vary greatly from region to region.

Back when I was a high schooler, it was the 13th and 16th regions that had the worst reputations as being protective of the local schools.... (times change)

Officials from all regions do a great job and should be commended for their efforts. Those who question officials should contact your region assigning secretary and give it a shot. I’m sure after trying your mind will change significantly about comments toward officials.

I agree with this post. It always gets me when I hear a fan yell "that's not your call" when it obviously was a good call. If the call was right, who cares which ref calls it.

Yes. Like it's not a foul if not called by the right person. :lol2:
