What’s your thoughts on this being the best Championship game ever played in the State of Kentucky? This game has to be right up there with the likes of the Brohm/Bush game.

Why do you think so or Why not?

I think yes. It had it all of two great teams. Offenses battled, then turnovers. Somerset took control 28-17, to only see Mayfield make a great comeback in the fourth 31-28 with in seconds, to lose it in seconds on a 28 second comeback. This game had it all. Two teams fighting adversity, high powered offenses, then defenses stepped up. They battled for 48 minutes to have it decided on a untimed down. Just crazy, and amazing all in one. Somerset, and Mayfield fans were like balloons. They got filled up with excitement to only get popped all in 28 seconds. Just wow. I also feel the story helps 6 trips to state in 113 years to win they're first one like that.

Dont know any other game with that dramatic of a finish, let alone a TD with zero seconds left. Does anyone know about a game ending like that in KY history?

I don’t know how much time was left on the clock but there was the Highlands Collins game. Starting QB has to go out because his helmet came off. The backup comes in and throws the game winning TD on the next play which I believe was 4th down. That game I think is still behind the Trinity Male game and this game but it’s up there.

I still put it second behind the 02 Trinity/ Male game. It was an offensive battle that netted over 500 yards per team. And the ending had the drama. As usual, the Rocks had small DBs compared to the Male receivers. On what I believe was the Dawgs final play, Bush had a receiver near the corner of the endzone who just had to catch the ball. But a smaller defender was able to leap high and grab a pick, sealing the game at 59-56.

I watched the Somerset game. It had it all as well. And if I could I put the two at 1A and 1B.

Beechwood 38 Lexington Christian 35 2007 title game. Incredible game with back and forth plays and momentum changes throughout.

There have been a ton of great games. Somerset/Mayfield arguably has the most dramatic finish and improbable comeback ever. Every game mentioned is worthy of the title, but like every other fan, I think ours was the best.

I haven't seen as many as others might have. Somerset/Mayfield has been the best. I would say 1995 Mayfield/Beechwood would be second for me. 4th quarter Beechwood scores and goes for 2 point conversion instead of the extra point and a tie. Pretty exciting game.

Murray and Beechwood in 94 had probably the most controversial state title game.

Beechwood was up 18-14 on Murray with seconds left on the clock, and Beechwood's QB Greg Hergott (currently their quarterbacks coach, in addition to being uncle to their team's current QB Cam Hergott) ran the ball about 20 yards backwards into the endzone. Time had run out and Hergott was in the back of the endzone; he heard an official's whistle and threw the ball in the air. A Murray defender caught the ball in the endzone, and the ref, Jerry Brewer, signaled a touchdown.

 

Hergott immediately ran over to the officials and started arguing that he heard a whistle blow. After a lengthy officials huddle, Brewer agreed, the play was called dead prior to the interception, and Beechwood was given the 18-16 win.

 

The Murray football coach and team refused to take the runners-up trophy and it just sat there in the middle of the field for over a half an hour until their principal finally grabbed it.

The 2003 Belfry/Etown 2A Championship game was pretty dramatic for those that remember it. I don't think it historically got the fanfare it should have at the time as Belfry and Etown were not exactly blue-blood programs at the time and the extent of the rosters not realized.

It was a back and forth game throughout. Etown took a 27-20 lead in the 4th Quarter and had the ball. Belfry had struggled to stop their passing attack all game and it was looking bleak for the Pirates when Doug Howard (who was having a pedestrian game on Offense for his standards) sacked Chris Todd and forced a fumble. Belfry recovered and David Jones punched it in for the game tying score.

 

In Overtime Belfry would intercept Etown on their first series, but it would come down to a 4th and Goal at the 1. Instead of going for the chip shot Field Goal, Haywood puts the ball into the hands of David Jones. Jones got hit in the backfield, but spun off and fell into the endzone for the game winning score.

 

That game ended up featuring four players that would go on to play SEC football. Two of which would even taste the NFL as Jones would have a cup of coffee with the Ravens and Deaderick would play a handful of years in the league.

Does someone have footage? I have never seen this play, but have always heard about it.

I want to say there was another title game where it appeared the team had scored the go ahead touchdown late in the 4th and a holding call was made. Anyone remember that one?
