Does someone have footage? I have never seen this play, but have always heard about it.

 

The film exists. I've seen it. To the best of my knowledge it's nowhere online though, currently.

I want to say there was another title game where it appeared the team had scored the go ahead touchdown late in the 4th and a holding call was made. Anyone remember that one?

 

That was a Mayfield state title game against Prestonsburg in 1993. They scored but was called for holding. Final score 13-12

What game was it (I believe it was in 93) where when running the clock out the QB threw the ball in the air to celebrate. The play wasn’t dead but the officials blew it dead.

It was the 1994 1A state finals that @Bud_Kilmer referred to in the post above yours.

 

Beechwood was up 18-14 on Murray with seconds left on the clock, and Beechwood's QB Greg Hergott (currently their quarterbacks coach, in addition to being uncle to their team's current QB Cam Hergott) ran the ball about 20 yards backwards into the endzone. Time had run out and Hergott was in the back of the endzone; he heard an official's whistle and threw the ball in the air. A Murray defender caught the ball in the endzone, and the ref, Jerry Brewer, signaled a touchdown.

 

Hergott immediately ran over to the officials and started arguing that he heard a whistle blow. After a lengthy officials huddle, Brewer agreed, the play was called dead prior to the interception, and Beechwood was given the 18-16 win.

 

The Murray football coach and team refused to take the runners-up trophy and it just sat there in the middle of the field for over a half an hour until their principal finally grabbed it.

Actually Hergs is the OC. You are right we were up 18-14 with about 10 secs left. We had that ball around our own 20 yard line. Coach Yeagle didn’t want to punt. I was standing right there when he told Greg to take the snap and run out of the end zone until the clock 0.00 for the 18-16. Thank God for Joey Brewer. He blew the whistle when he thought Greg went out of bounds. People think he would just throw the ball up in the air for no reason. He threw the ball up because we had just became the first school in Ky history to win 4 straight state titles.

 

Murray fans as well as Jon Bell who caught the ball can say what they want but they lost this game. Their coach Rick Fisher made a comment after the game saying “it took us 20 years to get back here now this iis the way they are going to treat us” haha who’s fault is that? They didn’t get scr@wed like they thought they did.

 

They had the ball inside our 30 yard line twice in the 4th qtr but couldn’t score. I didn’t know what had happened until we got into the locker room.after the game. We all went running down to the end zone. I thought there was a fight. At the end of the state game video you hear at least two whistles before Greg throws the ball up in the air. Channel 5’s George Vogel is the only station up here to actually show that video showing the two whistles. I’m pretty sure Greg has ever never watched this game nor will he probably ever., but I could be wrong.

 

From what I have been told Murray got rings and jackets as well as a banner saying they were the real state champs. Well after 25 years the 1994 Class A trophy is still in Ft.Mitchell as it should be. We are still in the Ky record books as the Class A state champion. enough of my rabbing as you can tell this is a very touchy subject for me.

Murray and Beechwood in 94 had probably the most controversial state title game.

 

It will always be the most controversial state game unless something else happens.

Thank God for rain that day. The rain helped us beat Bardstown for a second straight year with all of the speed they had on their team that year.

I seem to remember a Bowling Green - Cov Cath final that came down to the end.

 

The first Danville-Mayfield matchup in 87 was pretty exciting. Mayfield overcame a 17-7 deficit in the 4th to tie it. In the overtime Danville took the lead and then blocked the EP of Mayfield to win it.
