Lone Oak vs Boyle had an ending like that. Lone Oak led the whole game and went away from the passing game that was the best in the state. That is one reason why I hate the run the ball and kill clock. Do what got you there. If you have someone down then just step on their neck until you here a pop.

 

It was a great game. Boyle trailed by 10 I thought with about three minutes left. Blocked a punt. Scored on the ensuing drive. Shanked next punt and Boyle kicked FG with time running out to tie.

 

Two OT’s later Boyle won.

I can’t remember the year but wasn’t there a 2a game where the game went into double OT where it came down to the last play?

 

Boyle beat someone on the last play of the game a few years back as well when they went for the 2 point conversation.

 

Boyle County and Lone Oak was the 2009 4A title game I believe. It was at WKU and I was there. Boyle was down 29-13 at the start of the 4th quarter as I recall. They tied it at 29 to end regulation then both teams scored in overtime to make it 36-36. Lone Oak got a field goal and then Boyle got a QB sneak TD on 4th down to win it 42-39. I seem to remember some outrage from Lone Oak folks thinking the Boyle QB came up short. Hard to tell from where I was seated.

 

The 2A game you’re thinking of may be Breathitt County and Franklin-Simpson in 1995. Breathitt won 42-35 in double overtime. FS fumbled on third down on their 2OT possession. I wasn’t able to go to that one but I remember some

FS folks here saying there were a couple of bad calls late in that one that hurt FS. FS had a 14-0 lead early and a 28-20 lead late. Breathitt Co. was driving and fumbled which FS recovered but the Breathitt player was ruled down before the fumble. They went on to tie it 28–28 late in regulation. I’ve never seen the video of the game, but the story I remember was that in overtime, FS scored first to make it 35-28. Breathitt scored a TD pass on 4th down but I heard people say that they thought the receiver was out of bounds. Breathitt went undefeated and won their first state title that day. I think they went on to win 42 or 43 in a row and another state title the next year before losing in the playoffs in 1997.

I haven't seen as many as others might have. Somerset/Mayfield has been the best. I would say 1995 Mayfield/Beechwood would be second for me. 4th quarter Beechwood scores and goes for 2 point conversion instead of the extra point and a tie. Pretty exciting game.

Definitely a reflection of the confidence Beechwood had/has as a program.

We are all prisoners of the moment and believe what we witnessed or are part of was "the greatest ever..." Just human nature. The Brohm/Bush game was obviously legendary. Not often do you get two high level pro prospects going back and forth with one another.

 

In '99 I was a big fan of the St. X / Bryan Station game. That, too, went into OT with St. X pulling off the victory. Eric Shelton was the definition of "beast mode."
