November 20, 200619 yr Buster Olney was on ESPN Radio this morning being highly critical of the deal. With Soriano turning 31 in January, he is significantly older than A-Rod or Manny were when they signed similar contracts. Additionally, while he feels like he is a solid offensive player, this cost far out-weighs his value. The Cubs are going to play him in CF. Get this, they are trying to sign Cliff Floyd to play LF. Wowza.

November 20, 200619 yr The Cubs have signed two of the premier free agents on the market--Soriano and Ramirez. I have no doubt Hendry is going to sign at least one starter, maybe two. Plus Neal Cotts wants the chance to start. The Tribune Co. was scared out of their minds at the empty seats in August and September at Wrigley. They are either trying to actually win for once, or make the Cubs more valuable to sell. Either way the fans win and its a heck of a lot better than getting someone past their prime, which is the Cubs' usual m.o.

November 20, 200619 yr Making them more valuable to sell IMO Depends on who buys the Tribune Co. There are some groups that would immediately turn and dump the Cubs, other bidders would probably hang on to them. When you're talking about the LA Times, The Baltimore Sun, and The Chicago Tribune, the Cubs are an after-thought.
