Fleek is the glue to the team and was under utilized in this game. IMO

SIxer, read my post, I never once said Pouncey cost CCH the game. And in another post I actually pointed out some things CCH did wrong.

 

And I 100% agree with your comments here!

 

All I am saying is Pouncey should NOT be officiating games in which he has a conflict of interest! This is the 4th time I have seen him be obviously biased in favor of his AAU players this year!

 

The fouls called on CCH in the 3rd and 4th were ridiculous but that is part of the game and CCH has to own the loss.

 

However POUNCEY should excuse himself from these games!

 

Just a question. Did you have that same opinion when he reffereed game that includes CVH, the older Thelen? If he’s so biased against CCH why to CCH coaches consistently rate him as one of the top officials?

You say you are not blaming Pouncy but that is the key thing you allude to in your original post. If he’s so biased as much as you say please enlighten all of us with factual information instead of assumptions. If CCH wins my opinion is you don’t go down this path.

Obviously there was a great game played and I don’t think any of the officials determined the outcome of the game. Two great teams battling with one winning and another losing. It happens.

Mayer has a great first half but seemed to get careless in the 2nd Half. Fleek played very little for my liking.

Mayer was a beast in the first 12 minutes. But CCH coaches didnt recognize when he was tired. His Q4 was sloppy.

 

Fleek played an incredible first 4 minutes of Q3 then the coaches pulled him and he didnt come back in until under 3 mins in the game.

 

Finally, CCH down 3 with 15 secs left, get a timeout to design a play, dont sub any 3 pt shooters in, and send the ball to Mayer on the post who had just missed a layup.

I said it last time and I’ll repeat it again. It was also great to see the two student sections have fun cheering on their teams and even cooperating a few times on a couple cheers.

 

It was a very clean game. Both teams left it on the court.

Congrats to the Wood. Twice is a trend!!

 

Hope CovCath likes that 1st round matchup with Cooper.

 

Coach Goetz has to be over the moon.

Cooper probably wouldn’t like it either.

 

As an aside, I remember hearing way back when from the likes of George Schneider, Dan Tieman, and Lynn Ray, and Doc Brueggemann: "Win with class, lose with class." I get disappointed when I see that credo left by the wayside by members of the Covington Catholic community. Seems like there's a lot of that going on around the basketball crowd of late.

Beechwood has the talent this year. They have been a bit inconsistent at times throughout the season but two wins against a very good CCH squad is no fluke. They are clearly the better team this season. Congrats to coach Goetz for a great job in building this program!

Congratulations to Beechwood. They are having just an awesome and fun year for a small school that has has never had a ton of basketball success. I think Cov Cath is down and Beechwood is up this year and I also think Goetz has figured Cov Cath out. BW will win again if they play in the region. I will call it now that BW will the region and go to Rupp.

Beechwood scored the majority of their 2nd half points from the free throw line off of fouls where CCH had position and was playing amazing D ...

The better team this year is Beechwood without a doubt. I watched the game and officiating was outstanding. Both CCH and Beechwood should be proud of their respective performances last night. It was a great game in every way and a testament to what great high school basketball is all about!

Easy to figure out when you only have one guy consistently willing to shoot the ball outside of 10 feet! CCH size can be an issue at times, but they have major issues scoring outside of the paint. After having watched BW beat CCH twice, I’m still surprised at the way CCH was able to outmuscle Cooper in that 2nd half in Park Hills. Even more surprising after seeing how Cooper outmuscled Beechwood in Union.

 

One of the issues CCH has with the big lineup is staying in front of tough guards. There was a sequence in the 2nd half where Greene was guarding a much smaller guy. That guard drove to the middle and Greene’s hand was basically in his chest and called for fouls on both drives in about a 30 second span. He’s a freak athlete for sure but maybe not quick enough to stay in front of smaller, quicker guards.

 

If CCH is called for all the hands in the body, pushes and pulls of the jersey it changes the game. They get away with it most games, but sometimes they do not.

Most thought CCH would win and had reasons. Most of those same folks also think any one of 5-6 teams could win the region including Beechwood. So it’s not that big a surprise and it makes for great district and regional tournaments.

 

Officiating is always a topic and justifiably. You have to win in spite of it. But, why open the door by having such a conflict.

Without a doubt? Sheesh. 2 very tight games in which CovCath led for a good bit of the game and Beechwood is the "better team this year... without a doubt"?

 

I bet Goetz and the Tigers wouldn't want to play them again. Not saying they couldn't win again, but to me, it seems like 2 evenly matched teams this year and Beechwood was able to pull them out in the end. Good for Beechwood!
