Beechwood 57 Covington Catholic 53

Featured Replies

Mayer was strong early in the first half but ran out of gas and got sloppy in late Q2.

Then he was a big liability in Q4 with turnovers, fouls, and missed layups. He should never be bringing the ball up the court.

And whats with CCH's final play when down 3? They go for a 2 and pray for a foul. Poor coaching decision to not put 3 point shooters in...

Cov Cath just got Pouncey'd!

Pouncey should NOT be officiating High School games in which his AAU players are playing!

Beechwood scored the majority of their 2nd half points from the free throw line off of fouls where CCH had position and was playing amazing D ...

Pouncey'd!!!!!!

I actually called it in the "updates" thread before the game even started.

He should NOT be officiating High School games in which his AAU kids participate!!!!

Covcath for years has also got away with fouling other teams and not having it called. So it is interesting hearing people say things when officials actually call them on their fouls that they usually get away with.

Any stats?

Unsung player for Beechwood, C Duncan Baugh. He did yeoman's work in the paint for the Tigers against the many CCH big men.

I also have to credit the 6' Schilling's defense guarding CCH bigs.

Yep, it’s Pouncy’s fault. Same ref that called the 3rd foul on Draud in the first half! It was Pouncy’s fault that caused CCH to lose that 10 point lead. Maybe the CCH Asst Coach shouldn’t have gotten T’d up which ended up being a 4 point swing which ironically was the margin of loss which btw was not by Pouncy.

You keep holding on to that logic because next year it just may help you since 3 current CCH freshman play fir that same refs AAU organization you’re complaining about.

Conflicts of interest only come into play in the regionals, which is why there are regional rotations and at the Sweet 16 and just you’re aware, Pouncy will be reffing in both.

POUNCEY'D!!!!!!!!!!!

SIxer, read my post, I never once said Pouncey cost CCH the game. And in another post I actually pointed out some things CCH did wrong.

And I 100% agree with your comments here!

All I am saying is Pouncey should NOT be officiating games in which he has a conflict of interest! This is the 4th time I have seen him be obviously biased in favor of his AAU players this year!

The fouls called on CCH in the 3rd and 4th were ridiculous but that is part of the game and CCH has to own the loss.

However POUNCEY should excuse himself from these games!

James Pouncy has officiated these games for years...and is one of the BEST in NKY! As mentioned earlier, not a big deal when CCH was coming out on top, now they are getting Pouncy’d. James had players at NewCath, Dixie, Cooper, SK, Scott, to name a few schools 2 - 3 years ago. As mentioned by Mr. Sixer, James coaches the girls team now and has been for a number of years.

POUNCEY'D

This particular Pouncey definitely coached 9th Region 17U AAU players this year ... I witnessed it at multiple venues!

Congratulations to the Tigers for wanting this one more. This is Beechwood's second ever district title. First since 1949.

WOW!!!

Beechwood's other all tournament players.

Cole Busald. He was excellent defensively and instant energy off the bench. He helped turn the momentum to Beechwood with steals and harassing defense.

Zach Deathrage. He hit two big three pointers in the fourth quarter. Also set the pick for a Brannen 3 that a CCH player ran through fouling Deathrage. That turned into a four point play for Beechwood.

Congrats Beechwood on your 1st district title in 70 years...that is crazy.

Beechwood was trailing all game long, and never wilted. Just disappointed that CCH did not go down low more, when they had a ridiculous size advantage.

I've watched a little over half of the Tigers' Varsity games this year and I thought this was Deathrage's best game.

I never realized he spelled his named "Death-Rage." Pretty cool name.

Again...CCH guards need to hit more shots. Their front court also could make a few more bunnies.

Mayer has a great first half but seemed to get careless in the 2nd Half. Fleek played very little for my liking.

Was not at the game, but I listened in. The CCH radio crew kept talking about the consistent foul calling by the officials. "That's a consistent whistle," was the phrase I heard several times over from Dan Shields when fouls were called on both teams.

I also noticed hearing time and time and time again that CCH turned the ball over. That doesn't win games.

As an aside, I remember hearing way back when from the likes of George Schneider, Dan Tieman, and Lynn Ray, and Doc Brueggemann: "Win with class, lose with class." I get disappointed when I see that credo left by the wayside by members of the Covington Catholic community. Seems like there's a lot of that going on around the basketball crowd of late.
