Will there be a third game? Will the adage that it’s hard to beat a team three times hold up?

Without a doubt? Sheesh. 2 very tight games in which CovCath led for a good bit of the game and Beechwood is the "better team this year... without a doubt"?

 

I bet Goetz and the Tigers wouldn't want to play them again. Not saying they couldn't win again, but to me, it seems like 2 evenly matched teams this year and Beechwood was able to pull them out in the end. Good for Beechwood!

 

It sounds like you may be a CCH homer and that is fine...I am all about supporting your home team. But try to be unbiased and consider if CCH beat Beechwood twice in a single season and a Beechwood fan tried to make a statement that the Tigers barely lost and were somehow better, what would your response be? I think I know the answer.

The simple truth is Beechwood beat CCH twice,on a neutral court, with CCH at full strength. How many more times would the Tigers have to beat the Colonels this season before you could admit that Beechwood was better than CCH in 2018-19?

This is such an interesting matchup - Beechwood's guards and Covington Catholic's big men. Early in the game the Colonels hit some three pointers and that boosted their lead to double digits. Then Beechwood made it a full court game, hit some three pointers and worked their way to the win. Beechwood battled hard on the boards and blocked some shots to even up the inside game. I agree with others who said it looked like the Colonels wore down as the game went on.

 

This is going to be one of the most interesting regionals in a long time. There are a lot of teams that could win it.

Easy to figure out when you only have one guy consistently willing to shoot the ball outside of 10 feet! CCH size can be an issue at times, but they have major issues scoring outside of the paint. After having watched BW beat CCH twice, I’m still surprised at the way CCH was able to outmuscle Cooper in that 2nd half in Park Hills. Even more surprising after seeing how Cooper outmuscled Beechwood in Union.

 

One of the issues CCH has with the big lineup is staying in front of tough guards. There was a sequence in the 2nd half where Greene was guarding a much smaller guy. That guard drove to the middle and Greene’s hand was basically in his chest and called for fouls on both drives in about a 30 second span. He’s a freak athlete for sure but maybe not quick enough to stay in front of smaller, quicker guards.

 

If CCH is called for all the hands in the body, pushes and pulls of the jersey it changes the game. They get away with it most games, but sometimes they do not.

 

I couldnt agree more. The 2 guard is a big weakness for CCH.

 

Makes you wonder if CCH coaches regret squeezing out Brannen and Deere. Or if they could use Bishop who was let go to make room for kids who have not produced.

Beechwood's other all tournament players.

 

Cole Busald. He was excellent defensively and instant energy off the bench. He helped turn the momentum to Beechwood with steals and harassing defense.

 

Zach Deathrage. He hit two big three pointers in the fourth quarter. Also set the pick for a Brannen 3 that a CCH player ran through fouling Deathrage. That turned into a four point play for Beechwood.

 

The Tigers don't get to the District Championship game without those two and their contributions against HC.

Fleek is the glue to the team and was under utilized in this game. IMO

I agree. You knew someone was going to lose minutes if and when Michael came back, and it looks like the lion-share of those are coming from Fleek. This team has a ton of solid front-court high school players, but are not blessed with the same talent level or depth in the back-court.

I also think Goetz has figured Cov Cath out. BW will win again if they play in the region.

I really did underestimate just what a diligent, focused, and never say die team that Beechwood is. While watching the game I kept saying why can't the Colonels put these guys away? They should be dominating the paint, but it amazed me just how difficult it was for the Colonels to get close range shots off. The Tigers did an amazing job of contesting everything. Early only it felt that the Colonel "D" was way too stifling for the Tigers to get anything done, but ultimately they figured some stuff out, and started chipping away.

Fun game to watch. Very similar to the first game played in Fort Mitchell. Colonels with some uncharacteristic turnovers that kept Beechwood in it. Tigers missed some crucial free throws down the stretch, but so did the Colonels. Schilling had an answer all night long, as he was well deserving of the MVP. Looked like Mayer was pretty tired towards the end of the game, but that will happen with only a couple games under your belt. Brannen seemed hesitant early in the game but made the three ball in the corner when it mattered. Sets up for an exciting regional next week. It wouldn't bother me in the least bit if these two matched up again with the Sweet 16 berth on the line.

Mayer is certainly a load and no one can deny a force, but I sorta think that he's not fine tuned yet, and understandably so is playing like it's the first couple weeks of the season. It's disturbing to see a fine dedicated player like senior Fleek who has proved himself dependable all season to have to take a back seat. I say if Fleek saw more significant minutes last night the Colonels would've had a better chance of winning.

One telling stat in this game is the sloppiness of Beechwood in the 1st half with 10 turnovers, but in the 2nd half the Tigers committed 1 turnover which I believe was the Bieger offensive foul.

Beechwood beat CCH twice. That's awesome for them! I'm certainly not a CCH homer. Just a basketball fan. I would never say CCH was better if they would have won 2 games by a combined 6 points. Two evenly matched teams in which either game, could have gone either way. I'm just a realist. I predicted CCH would win game 2, I was wrong.

 

Beechwood is excellent this year. Not taking anything from them, just saying the two teams are evenly matched. Typically in a close game, coaching matters, and Goetz had these 2 games figured out. Great for him and the players who executed the plan.
