article 11th Region Week 9 Review

As we enter the last week of January things are becoming clearer and clearer in the always tough and competitive 11th Region. In a year where most people, including myself, thought the region would be down compared to years past, it has turned out to be quite the exciting season. The district tournament seeds are starting to come into shape and the top teams are preparing for the stretch run!

 

TEAM RANKINGS

1. Scott County (23-1) - The Cardinals keep on rolling along despite missing one of the top players in the state of Kentucky in Michael Moreno. This past week the Cardinals picked up two 42nd District wins on the road over Frederick Douglass and Bryan Station. In the victory over Frederick Douglass, Coach Billy Hicks picked up his 1,000th career win. An absolutely amazing accomplishment. Congrats to Coach Hicks on another milestone in an already amazing career. This week provides one of the toughest challenges to date for Scott County as they host Henry Clay. If the Cardinals were to win they would clinch the 1 seed in the district tournament, a loss would me a tie breaker is necessary. Scott County follows up the next day with a game against Walton Verona at the Jock Sutherland Classic hosted by Lafayette. Another solid test for the Cardinals.

 

2. Henry Clay (19-4) - The Blue Devils are now winners of 7 in a row and playing their best basketball of the season. They finished the past week 2-0 with wins over Trinity and Lafayette. The win over Trinity, a full strength Trinity, proves that Henry Clay can play with and beat any team on any given night. The road gets no easier this week for the Blue Devils they hit the road to Madison Central and then finish the week at Scott County in a game most people in this state should have circled on the calendar. The last meeting between the two teams was a close one with Scott County pulling away down the stretch. This game could quite possibly be the best game in the region this year.

 

3. Woodford County (16-6) - The Yellow Jackets started the week off win a big win over 8th Region power Collins and then followed that up with an overtime win over Frankfort to lock down the 1 seed in the 41st District tournament. Over the weekend they feel hard to Trinity in a game that was within 3 points at the half. Overall a great week for the Yellow Jackets. This week Woodford County heads to Powell County and Shelby County before returning home to face off with Anderson County in a preview of a new district rivalry next year when they head off to the 8th Region.

 

4. Lexington Christian Academy (18-6) - What a great week for the Eagles. They headed to Richmond to defend their All A State Championship. Unfortunately, they fell just one game short and lost to University Heights in this afternoon's finals. However, they did pick up wins over Owensboro Catholic, Mayfield, and Walton Verona. The win over Walton Verona might have been one of the more impressive defensive performances of the year, holding the Bearcats to 22 points for the game!! The Eagles head to Christian Academy of Louisville and then end the week with a big road test at Lafayette in a game that has huge 43rd District Tournament seeding implications.

 

5. Frankfort (16-5) - The Panthers finished the week 1-1 with a win over an improving Madison Southern on the road and an overtime loss at Woodford County. The loss to Woodford County means Frankfort will be the 2 seed in the 41st District Tournament. Three games on the slate this week for the Panthers. First, they will host Shelby County and Highlands before heading across town to Franklin County to play Paul Laurence Dunbar in the Gary Moore Classic.

 

6. Lexington Catholic (12-11) - Don't look now but the Knights are getting hot at just the right time. Winners of 5 in a row the Knights disposed of Robertson County and Tates Creek this past week. Lexington Catholic is in position to finish as the 1 seed in the 43rd District tournament but this week will either strengthen or weaken that chance. The Knights will host Lafayette early in the week and a win will clinch the 1 seed a loss could result in a 3 seed. Then just to make things more fun they end the week by traveling to Trinity!

 

7. Lafayette (14-9) - The Generals started the week off by beating 43rd District rival Paul Laurence Dunbar in a much need district seed win, but fell hard to end the week by the hands of Henry Clay. A big week awaits the Generals as they play two 43rd District seeding games, first at Lexington Catholic and then they host Lexington Christian as part of the Jock Sutherland Classic.

 

8. Madison Central (11-10) - The Indians finished the week 1-1 with a win over Frederick Douglass and a close loss to Trinity. Big man Isaiah Cozart continues to dominate his competition, this week pouring in averages of 21.5 points and 17.5 rebounds. Regardless of the competition or the outcome Mr. Cozart brings it every night. This week the Indians host Henry Clay and Harrison County before heading to Ballard over the weekend.

 

9. Tates Creek (10-10) - The downward spiral continues for the Commodores after dropping 2 games this week. The losing streak has reached 6 and 7 of the last 8. This week Tates Creek fell to George Rogers Clark and then lost to Lexington Catholic in a game they had the lead most of the 2nd half. The loss to Lexington Catholic ensures the Commodores will once again play in the 4/5 game of the 43rd District Tournament. This week Tates Creek hosts Sayre then hits the road across town to Frederick Douglass and Paul Laurence Dunbar.

 

10. Frederick Douglass (9-14) - The Broncos are also on a long losing streak, one that has now reached 6, including 4 losses this past week to Madison Central, Beechwood, Scott County, and Simon Kenton. A rough week to say the least. Up next the Broncos host Bryan Station and Tates Creek before heading to Sayre to end the week.

 

11. Paul Laurence Dunbar (8-13) - The Bulldogs finished the week 1-1 with a loss to Lafayette and a win over Bryan Station. The Bulldogs are kind of up and down right now but a lot of that has to do with the uncertain health of Jared Gadd. By far the Bulldogs best player, if he plays at full strength Dunbar is much better. Up next the Bulldogs host Paris and Tates Creek before heading to Franklin County to play Frankfort as part of the Gary Moore Classic on Saturday.

 

12. Franklin County (11-10) - The Flyers won their only contest this week with a win over Louisville Collegiate as part of the Hoosier Gym Classic, where participating teams got to play in the gym the famous basketball movie Hoosiers. Up next the Flyers host Marion County, head to Bourbon County, and then host Conner as part of the Gary Moore Classic.

 

13. Madison Southern (13-10) -The Eagles took a step backward from their play of late by dropping 2 games this week to Frankfort and Cordia. The Eagles host Somerset, travel to East Jessamine, and host Clinton County to complete their week.

 

14. Bryan Station (4-16) - The Defenders dropped both games this week to Paul Laurence Dunbar and Scott County but are showing signs of improvement. The Dunbar game was close and after 3 quarters against Scott County the Defenders were within one possession. This week Bryan Station heads to Frederick Douglass and Knox Central.

 

15. Model (11-10) - The Patriots dropped both of their games this past week to Garrard County and Bourbon County. Up next Model plays 4 games this week. They host Western Hills, Rockcastle County, Whitefield Academy, then head to Franklin County to play Owen County in the Gary Moore Classic.

 

16. Western Hills (7-12) - The Wolverines won both of their games this week over Shelby County and Owen County and are playing much better of late. This week provides 4 games for Western Hills as they head to Model, host Estill County and Southwestern, and then head over to Franklin County to play West Jessamine in the Gary Moore Classic.

 

17. Sayre (5-16) - The Spartans finished 1-2 on the week with losses to Bryan Station and Breathitt County and a win over home school team Bluegrass United. This week Sayre heads to Tates Creek and Nicholas County and hosts Frederick Douglass.

 

18. Berea (12-9) - The Pirates finished the week 2-1 with wins over Frankfort Christian Academy and Danville Christian and a loss to Jackson County. This week Berea will play 4 games. They will host Wellspring Guardians and St. Patrick and travel to Nicholas County and Robertson County.
