Covington Catholic faces backlash after tense exchange with indigenous marchers

So, your ready to label a 14,15,16 year old kid as a racist for chanting build the wall. I hope your children are angels when they get to that point otherwise that might take a terrible toll on you. I'll say it again, kids do dumb things.

It’s not hard to teach your kids how wrong it is to be racist.

Well, you can choose to believe they were instigated. I’ll believe they were the obvious aggressors. :thumb:

History says they have always been the aggressors.

That 6 second, edited video doesn’t explain away the several minutes of video from two different angles that show what that group of students did.

Kinda crazy how easy it is for some to dismiss the behavior, isn’t it?

Folks can defend CovCath all they want but facts are that it has been a rough couple of months for their reputation. I feel sorry for folks I know who are connected to CovCath that despise this behavior but a realistic mindset should let us all know that anyone connected to CovCath is going to be labeled a racist. Right or wrong that’s just the way it is in 2019. This is a national story and truths and falsehoods about CovCath are just beginning.

I read that the superintendent was one of the chaperones. Is that true?

It is my understanding that is not true.

I see a tremendous failure on so many levels here. And unfortunately, the state itself is taking a hit from the reactions I’ve seen. Just a sad, pathetic display.

Again, you can see Cov Cath students do this sort of thing at any almost Cov Cath basketball game. If this had happened in the gym, it wouldn't have made any waves. It's been acceptable to taunt and make fun of opposing players and schools for years.

You're right. The student section is celebrated at every opportunity.

The Diocese of Covington and Covington Catholic High School have issued the following statement:

We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general, Jan. 18, after the March for Life, in Washington, D.C. We extend our deepest apologies to Mr. Phillips. This behavior is opposed to the Church’s teachings on the dignity and respect of the human person.

The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion.

We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement.

I would be pretty surprised if they expelled anyone.

I think what needs to be remembered here is that these kids are kids. Justification for their behavior, no. But kids do dumb things.

UMM, No. He has been named and I won't share that, but he is a senior and at this age he should be a leader to the other students. There are several videos with different view points, some with sound and some without. The ones with sound are rough to watch. They are mocking them, you see one kid moving around in a Indian like dance, the boys were chanting and the smirk on the boys face said it all. "I am entitled, arrogant, and you are beneath me." Just my opinion and not the first, fifth or tenth time that I have witnessed very poor behavior from the boys of this school. So no, kids being kids is an excuse, boys being boys is an excuse. A poor one at that. Raise the bar of expectation. I'm sure a nice donation to the school will show up real soon and smooth everything over.

If you, or anyone, names or shares any names here on BGP you will be suspended.

The pompous/entitled attitude that many from Cov Cath have, I don't find this surprising at all.

Gonna be an interesting day Tuesday in Park Hills.
