Covington Catholic faces backlash after tense exchange with indigenous marchers

Featured Replies

It's a bad situation. Obviously, there isn't excusing it away. I'm not going to make any attempt at doing that.

Clearly the respect owed to the individuals associated with the Indigenous People protest that was also taking place in Washington DC was not given by that group of Covington Catholic students. Clearly there is an enormous breakdown in understanding among the students at Covington Catholic regarding the plight of Native Americans and exactly how disrespectful that was.

I hope that can be very, very quickly addressed and that this situation will bring about some REAL introspection on behalf of the school, the students, and the parents at Cov Cath about their Christian mission and exactly what that does entail.

With that said, I also truly hope - and believe - that this is the product of the actions of few affecting many, and a William Golding-esque mob mentality taking over in some of the worst ways. I know, personally, that there are many many good students, families, teachers, and administrators involved at Covington Catholic. I know that the school has many many MANY successes in their Christian outreach, including thousands of hours of community volunteering on an annual basis, and student groups like the Joseph of Armithea society that helps offer respectful burial services and pallbearers for deceased northern Kentucky indigents, who would otherwise be simply buried in an unmarked grave in a by a crew of county construction workers. I know there are good things happening at the school, and many of them.

Unfortunately, now there is a band of thirty or forty poorly-supervised 16-18 year olds showing off their massive ignorance and stupidity in those videos - and that is what I see - and those actions are literally and completely overshadowing all of the thousands of hours of community outreach and Christian service done by students at the school.

One more enormous lesson to be learned here is how much proper supervision and chaperoning was lacking. I kept waiting for a parent or teacher to start grabbing those kids and throwing them back in another direction. I didn't even see a single one present. Huge problem as well.

CWB, you embody the “Spirit that will not die.” You in no way defend or excuse the behavior. You just confirm that CovCath is better than the actions of this group.

Racism doesn’t happen on accident.

So, your ready to label a 14,15,16 year old kid as a racist for chanting build the wall. I hope your children are angels when they get to that point otherwise that might take a terrible toll on you. I'll say it again, kids do dumb things.

That corroborates what I just posted...

Would you please explain that further for everyone?

There has to be more than what I saw. All I saw was the kid standing about a foot from the drummer and staring at him. It is obnoxious and stupid. It is disrespectful to to that to an elderly gentlemen. I could not have told you that it was a Cov Cath kid from just watching the video.

What else happened? The video I saw was muted so I couldn't hear anything but the kid did not seem to move his lips.

There are other videos that show the group, many of which were clearly wearing Cov Cath gear, verbally and physically mocking the drummer. Just do a quick google search...it’s plenty easy to find. You can even see that in the video you refer to. Don’t just focus on the one kid in the drummers face.

Thanks

Keep defending racism, entitlement and elitism and youth will continue to behave this way. You're a part of the problem.

It’s disheartening that my fellow Catholics are some of the most disrespectful, hypocritical lot. For shame, CovCath.

Would you please explain that further for everyone?

There are reports that the group from CCH was initially taunting a group of African American protesters, and the Native American gentleman stepped in between the groups to try to diffuse the situation. The video above that I said corroborates what I said, shows the man walking in between the two groups. I'd assume shortly after that is when the CCH group surrounded him and set their sights on him.

Ok, buddy.

I can't glean anywhere near that much from the videos I have viewed.

Absolutely not.

Why not? I explored numerous cities across the world with no chaperones when I was that age. Personally I don’t think the presence of lack their of has anything to do with what took place in this video.

People were saying the Native American gentleman instigated with the CCH group, then pointed to the video of him walking towards them as the evidence of that. Hearing that he was stepping in between the two groups makes much more sense than him just provoking a group of 50 teenagers.

Making more sense and being true are vastly different.

Well, you can choose to believe they were instigated. I’ll believe they were the obvious aggressors. :thumb:
