When a team beats a team ranked higher in the polls, it is considered an upset.

 

You can talk about the validity of the polls if you like, but that is generally how an upset is notched, by beating a team ranked ahead of you.

Yes to a degree based on the expectations and what the poll showed. Very few gave South a chance.

 

Some even said “South is running into something they haven’t seen before. Cov Cath by a running clock”. Etc etc. so to those people it was an upset.

Called it this summer that 5A was Souths to lose. To you no it’s not an upset it went they way you thought.

 

To me personally no it’s not an upset. I knew that after Cov Cath smacked South last year that Smith would have them prepared if they met again this year.

 

It was a great game and it could have easily been more lopsided if South had scored at the two on their first possession instead Bush fumbles. Then trick play pitch to Harrison flip back to Bush pass deep that didn’t get the interference call. Withouth the small hold on the sideline it was a TD.

 

But to say that Cov Cath has their chances as well. Th fumble with about 3:00 to go on the 2 yard line killed them. Some of the other turnovers took the momentum.

 

All and all this was a great game. By two great teams that went to the wire.

 

This years state finals was probably one of the best weekends in a long time multiple close games that were not decided till then end. Great weekend of football capped off by a great 5A championship game.

Every single team for 2 years straight till today. Again if they had an L or two coming into today it wouldn't be an upset. I'm not a CovCath guy or anything so don't think I'm being a homer. I just see state champs that haven't lost in 2 years....

Based on the poll and ranking, yes. If more people consider one team better but the other teams wins it is always an “upset.” Doesn’t really game anything away from SW. Less than 12 months ago CCH running clocked them and hadn’t lost since.

I would guage CCH as pretty good to take the first half pounding and then be 5 yards from winning the game. The margin was extremely narrow between the two teams.

Upset only in the sense that the #2 ranked team beat #1. Minor upset if at all.

You had two teams with great records and quality wins clashing on a neutral field, hard to say one was definitely better than the other.

Not an upset. South was worthy of playing CovCath and they showed that today.

The people that called for a running clock were certainly not CCH people. We knew SW had almost their entire team back. I predicted a 1 point victory for CCH, and it was close to coming to fruition before the fumble.

Very, very few outside South Warren fans thought South Warren would win the game. Yes, it was an upset because the favorite lost. Cov Cath was probably a 7 point favorite going into the game and they lost. That is an upset. Any time the favorite to win loses a game it is an upset.

Nah I had conversations before the season started and said that SW was going to beat Cov Cath for the title. #2 SW with a 14-0 record beat #1 Cov Cath that had a 14-0 record. Not an upset in my book.

I think people are confusing upset with surprise or maybe shock. The large majority of people expected CCH to win and that same large majority thought South Warren was good enough to win.

Exactly, and I think this falls more in that category. I do not find it shocking South Warren won.

I was not shocked SW won, just put odds on CCH. No one defines upset by shock. If number 3 on NCAAF ranking loses to number 10 it referred to as an upset. SW won.....in an upset.

 

Not the biggest upset ever or anything, just an upset. Doesn’t change the size of their ring or anything.
