Was South Warren winning the 5A state Championship an upset? I’ve seen a discussion on twitter about it and have seen it mentioned as an upset on here as well. Is this an upset? If so, why?

 

I say it isn’t an upset because I have been telling anyone who would listen(since July) that South Warren was going to win 5A this season. They returned way too much experience along with their QB(most important position in HS football). The QB that just won MVP of the 5A State Championship game.

 

Last year’s loss to CovCath served as motivation to this team. They knew they were better than that and they knew what they needed to do to have another shot at CovCath. When the season started the experts all picked BG and CovCath over South Warren. Honestly, after they dismantled BG folks should have taken notice then.

 

South Warren won with their defense. Best defense in the state. Defense wins championships. We all should have seen this coming.

 

Not an upset in my opinion.

Without question!

South Warren dominated for 2-1/2 quarters in all phases. It did surprise me, but CC never got smacked in the face during the entire season; so, they reeled too long until they bowed their backs and made a valiant late round comeback. I honestly felt they were over-confident and surprised by how tough S. Warren played them. Their slow reaction to the RPO in the first half was their eventual undoing. I think CC wins 2of 3; but, this isn't tennis.

What if it's the best team in the state that beats them?

Now they are the best team. It was just a claim before the game. If CovCath came in with a few L's on the season it would be different. They were still undefeated returning champs.

It was just a claim for CCH too... Just because you won the title last year doesn’t automatically make you the best team in the current year.

To be the BEST you got to beat the BEST. That was done today.

I would not call this an upset. But that is my opinion. South Warren dominated good teams like CovCath did this year.

So who did CovCath beat to be determined the best?

If you go by rankings, maybe. If by talent and the way the game was played, no. With some thinking that South Warren and Covington Catholic are the top two teams in the state, including myself, I would say no.

Not an upset. Two evenly matched teams and one was a little bit better than the other today. Same thing happened in some of the other state final games.
