Scott Draud Averaged over 36 points a game his senior year at Highlands. This was before the three point line and just about all of his shots were bombs from downtown. Best shooter by far that I have ever seen.....

a stellar career? I dont think so. Heck, he never played defense in HS, and shot it 35 times a game. I can remember when he played us at home and a few times he stood at half court waiting to get the ball.

I'll put a plug in for an all stater from my school. I think he would have to be considered for any a top 10 shooting list. Most BGP members are too young to remember him, but anyone familiar with mountain basketball in the early '60s (especially in the 14th region) should probably remember him.

 

Paul Smith, Owsley County High class of '62. Led the state in scoring his

senior year averaging in the mid-30s. Scored well over 3,000 career points. Left hander with a deadly touch. Went on to play his college ball at Mississippi State for Babe McCarthy, and later Joe Dan Gold. He had the record for most consecutive free throws made in the SEC, I believe during the '65-'66 season (I think it was 44), until it was broken by a Vandy player about 20 years later.

1) Chris Lofton(Mason County)-saw him score 54 points on his own senior night. Would (and still will) pull from anywhere.

2) Richie Farmer(Clay County)-a great pure shooter. Automatic on free throws.

3) Ervin Stepp(Phelps)-never saw him play, but when you average 60+ for a season you have to give him some credit.

4) Scott Draud(Highlands)-went on to have a good career at Vandy. Have heard stories about him making 48 out of 50 from the elbow at Ken Shields NKU camp.

5) Rex Chapman(Apollo)-high rising jump shot. Played in the NBA for a long time.

Long ago in the 15th region was a guy named Leonard Carpenter. In 1953 he established a new Kentucky career scoring record. with over 3,000 points. He was the first player to break the 3,000 point barrier. A great jump shooter. His record still stands in Magoffin County. He must be mentioned in top shooters to play in Kentucky.

Ok, for the official top 10 list - I'll take those 5 and add "King" Kelly Coleman and Allan Houston in there. Who are the other 3?

He was a great, great player, but anyone who thinks Richie Farmer is a better shooter than Phil Cox never saw Phil Cox play.

Also don't forget the perm he sported as he (Scott Draud) won the MVP of the NIT in Madison square Garden while at Vandy.

Casey Alsip from Scott County is the best shooter I ever played against. His size kept him from being a big time college player somewhere. Lofton was also amazing.

I did see Farmer and Houston, but that was in college and the NBA with Houston so I didnt count them.

He was very good. Very talented and athletic, but when he got a good look it was automatic.
