On a purely shooting basis the best I have seen are:

 

1. Chris Lofton

2. Richie Farmer

3. Phil Cox

4. Travis Ford

5. Patrick Sparks

 

These guys were all automatic, if they got a look. Great range, great confidense, just super high school players. As high school players these guys were not just great shooters but, also terrific athletes that basically no one could guard. In college, they did not have the athletic advantage (they had in high school) but, were great shooters.

 

The best three players that I have seen in Kentucky are undoubtedly

1. Allen Houston

2. Rex Chapman

3. Darrell Griffith.

 

These three were very good shooters, had good size, good handles, great confidense and absolutely world class athleticism. There have been a number of great players from Kentucky but, I really think these 3 are the best.

I would put Scott Draud ahead of Chapman. Because it is best SHOOTER

From what I saw, I don't know if Ervin was the best of the Stepps.

If you average 60 points a game for a whole season, you can play. That's 60 points a game with no 3-pointers and in a 32-minute game.

Oops, 53.7 points per game for an entire season. Also, 40.4 ppg for a high school career. He had games of 75, 69, 68, 66, 65, and 65. I didn't see Cox on any lists for shooting or scoring.

And no one can say it wasn't against quality competition:

68 against Millard

66 against Elkhorn City

65 against Hurley, Va.

Who knows what those teams had back then? If you score 75 points in a church league game, you're accomplished something. There's no way to argue that Ervin Stepp isn't one of the greatest shooters in Kentucky high school history.

Stepp was a very good high school player, but two facts are being ignored:

 

Most coaches take out their star players when they get 40 or 50 points. Stats were clearly padded against bad, bad competition. You and I and everyone else knows those weren't good teams.

I'm not sure about Stepp's college career, but he scored alot of points in high school. Also, he did play for Phelps High School - which isn't exactly the mecca of Kentucky high school basketball.

Wasnt around for his playing days, but know from stories around here that he flat got it done. When Chris Lofton was a senior many people in the area were comparing the two.

I saw Ervin Stepp many times in High School & he definitely fits in this thread as one of the top 5 shooters off all time. Regardless of the competition he could shoot! I saw him about 3 summers ago playing in a tourney in Lexington & the 1st 7 trips down the floor he hit 7straight 3's ! Not bad for a 40 year old guy. I remember Ronnie Lyons & you could put him in there also as he had the same kind of range.
