One and dones returning versus G League option

Featured Replies

G League option is terrible idea. Any kid who takes that route had bad advice. Of course, there are a few "weird" circumstances that could impact that decision.

He's very long and likes to float around the perimeter a bit. Funky looking shot. Decent ball skills for 6'8. It wouldn't surprise me to see him in the G League for more than one year.

Saying he "floats" is just a nicer way of saying I don't like his motor, so no argument there. :D

He's easy to see potential because of his length and solid skill set, but I'm a big production guy. He just hasn't stacked up there with any consistency. Agree next year won't be his only stop in the G League...

If any of these guys have a chance to get some shoe money doing it this way, it’s a no brainer IMO. These are grown men playing in the G League with experience so it’s not like he’s gonna go in and dominate. It’s risky.

I get that you think that. I'm wondering what evidence you have for that? Do you think college coaches are better than NBA coaches?

Yeah there are some college coaches better than some NBA coaches. As for your evidence it's my opinion that a player playing for Cal, K, Self and many others gets better and more personal attention than the average G League coach gives. There may be some great GL coaches, but we know there are some great college coaches. But again it's my opinion.

Maybe you can find evidence backing up your opinions that the GL is better tool to develop players.

If you peruse the list of G-League head coaches, you will find many with no NBA level coaching experience, even as assistants. Stan Heath is the head coach of the Lakeland Magic, for example.

Aaron Miles was as assistant director of student-athlete development at Kansas for one year and an assistant at Florida Gulf Coast the next before becoming the head coach of the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Coby Karl (George Karl's son) was an assistant one year for the Westchester Knicks, then became head coach for the LA D-fenders/South Bay Lakers.

I submit that the coaching at the college level, especially at the elite programs, is as good if not better than those examples.

G-League will replace college in the next 10-15 years for the big time college recruits. You're getting "paid" more than you were in college, plus endorsements. They are now offering two way contracts, so it's no different then MLB, NHL, as they basically sign you as prospect give you a signing bonus. You get to practice against other pro's people who were All-Americans, All-Conference,etc.

Don't have to go to class and can literally work on your game all day long.

Most the kids skipping college aren’t eligible for two way contracts and the vast majority of kids will make very little on endorsements if any. They will have to up the salary for it to really start to impact college IMO.

Not going to speak for coaching, but no doubt the level of competition is better in the G-League. Remember, most in college are not good enough to make the G-League.

As of yet, I said 10-15 years. G-League will become no different then minor league baseball, or junior hockey leagues. It'll go back to the old NBA Draft with 10 rounds, if you want to go to college go, want to play in the minors here's a contract, or straight to the NBA.

The NBA draft system is not broke. I don’t think they are in any rush to make any significant changes like that because they really have no reason to do so. Best case, it stays how it is mostly and salaries are higher next 10-15 year IMO.

Let's not forget, the "one and done" scenario came out of the NBA Players Association resistance to roster spots/salary dollars being absorbed by young guys, not ready but management willing to take a flyer on their future development. Limited dollars and spots being absorbed. Now that the G League has begun to flourish as a true development league, it appears logical that the unions resistance may become a little less selfish (if that is ever possible) and the opportunity for young guys to have a real professional option out of high school could become a reality. The days of one-and-dones could become a thing of the past. I don't think that would necessarily be a bad thing.

The G league will teach the kids pro basketball principles...the college game is vastly different from the pro game. Much more open floor concepts. Darius is a better player than he is getting credit for IMO. I thought he played well against Langford in their matchup. It's a risky proposition at this point in it's infancy, but I suspect there will be some changes to make it more appeasing to the elite guys.

I get that you think that. I'm wondering what evidence you have for that? Do you think college coaches are better than NBA coaches?
Let's say 10 NBA teams need head coaches this off season and they can have their pick of any College or G League coach. Any and all college and G League coaches are on the table. Now list the coaches hired from 1 - 10.

You're confusing an owner desiring to have a high-profile coach with NBA coaching abiliy.

How many high-profile college coaches have gone onto NBA successes?

At the beginning of the 2017 season there were 4 head coaches and 29 assistant coaches in the NBA that came from the G League.

The argument that you get better coaching in college has no basis. Two different games.

You see any NBA teams running the Jim Boeheim 2-3?

Considering zone defense is illegal in the NBA, the answer is obviously no.
