CJ’s pass to Jake for a jam was worth going to see. While CCH was sloppy at times on defense and they missed some normally made shots, their defense was outstanding as usual. Dixie had to work so hard to get anything. I thought the red colonels might attack the press more and attempt to score on it.

Some thoughts about watching the Colonels battle last night.

1) The Cov Cath Colonels continue to play great defense. Forced Dixie best player with 9 TO.

2) Watching Dixie’s Fan last night, taunt Cov Cath student section was the price of admission. Early in the game when the game was close he was doing things that many people in the gym was shaken their heads too!

3) CJ Frederick continues to be on fire. The turning point of the game was when he hit the 3 at the buzzer of the 1st half. District MVP-Check, Regional MVP- Check.

4) Covington Catholic coaching staff continues to provide a great game plan while the Colonels forced 22 TO. Dixie shot from the FG: 30% 3FG:19%.

Their guards hold the ball too long and then try to throw over the top. That doesn’t work against CovCath. They have too much length. Dixie made a good adjustment bringing their bigs into the backcourt to break the press.

CCH started off really sloppy. Lots of turnovers, missed free throws, and bunnies. Played exceptional defense, and started to play their game in the 2nd. AJ was a beast on the boards, and CJ was outstanding.

 

I agree with this explanation of the game. CJ was really good, and I'm not sure a young man understands & plays his role better than AJ Mayer. Jake Walters had a couple of jams with authority, and the oop from CJ was outstanding. The CCH length on defense is tough to maneuver and negotiate.

 

I thought Schreck should have been more of a focal point, and i thought a few of the younger guys forced some shots, but it seems there weren't many other options. When you lose by 43, the opponent is just clearly better (typically).

 

Congrats to Dixie on a nice year, and good luck to CCH!

As I said before, they have an excellent shot of getting to the finals and winning provided they take care of the basketball and limit TO's which is their only Achilles heal if they have one. They have all the other pieces.
